The chest of a traveler splits open to reveal a toothy maw where a heart should be, only to seal shut and become a simple scar a moment later. Play a Graft-kin if you want to be a living disguise, an evolved dungeon predator that has finally learned how to wear a human face and walk among the surface folk as one of their own.
To a casual observer, a Morphic Graft-kin appears as a standard humanoid of any common lineage, typically a human or a sturdy folk of dwarven height. However, their skin possesses a slightly waxy or rubbery texture and their movements carry an unsettling, fluid precision. Their most striking and horrifying features are the seams: long, thin, silver-pink scars located on their chest, forearms, or calves. These are not wounds, but dormant, lipless mouths that remain fused shut until the creature feeds or defends itself. When they use their inherent shifting abilities, their flesh ripples like liquid lead before settling into a new identity.
Most Morphic Graft-kin live solitary lives within the crowded districts of major cities where they can vanish into the crowd. Unlike their mindless mimic ancestors, they possess a keen interest in individual identity. They often 'borrow' the life of a deceased or missing person, stepping into their roles with terrifying accuracy. They do not have a unified culture of their own, but rather a shared understanding of the 'Long Game', the practice of maintaining a persona for years without being caught. They gather in secret circles known as Coalescence Cells to share information about prey and the ever-shifting politics of the surface world.
Graft-kin are rarely lawful, as their very nature is one of deception and fluidity. Most lean toward neutral alignments, driven by the biological imperative to survive and feed. Those who embrace their aberrant origins may worship deities of secrets or chaos, while others seek to find a soul through the mimicry of virtuous deeds. They often view the concept of a 'true self' as a philosophical puzzle rather than a biological reality.
They do not build their own cities. Instead, they inhabit 'hollowed spaces'. A Graft-kin home might be the attic of a busy tavern or a crawlspace behind a local library. They prefer environments with plenty of furniture and mundane objects, as they find comfort in surroundings that mirror their ancestral forms. In these dens, one might find furniture that looks slightly wrong, as the Graft-kin may spend their rest periods partially transformed into a chair or a rug to keep their shapeshifting muscles limber.
They view other races through a lens of parasitism and admiration. They find 'fixed' beings like humans and elves fascinating for their rigid permanence. Relationships with others are almost always built on a lie, though some Graft-kin have been known to form deep, genuine bonds with adventurers, eventually revealing the toothy mouths hidden under their clothing as a sign of ultimate trust. They are instinctively wary of those with true sight or powerful divination magic.
