Atmosphere
Quiet and watchful. Wind whistles through gaps in the upper stonework, and the smell of lamp oil and cold ash lingers near the shrine. Weapons on the walls are kept clean, but the rest of the house feels lived-in rather than grand.
Style
A practical mix of old dwarven stonework and later human additions: thick gray-stone walls, squared lintels, narrow windows, and exposed timber beams. The L-shaped plan is clear from the courtyard, where the two wings meet at a sturdy corner stair.
What stands out
History
The oldest wing began as a dwarven wayhouse beside a long-abandoned quarry road. Generations later, a human family added the upper floor and the second wing, keeping the original shrine intact. The name comes from the steady whistle of wind through a narrow crack in the upper stairwell. The quarry road has mostly fallen out of use, and the manor now serves as a family residence and a stopping place for travelers who know its owners.
- The Dwarven Shrine
The main floor’s east wing holds a broad, stone-lined shrine to the dwarven ancestors and the forge gods. A carved lintel depicts a hammer striking an anvil, and a row of iron lamps burns before a waist-high altar. The shrine is large enough for a dozen worshippers to gather, though its old benches and offerings are kept plain. The family welcomes respectful visitors, but the altar and ancestral names are not to be touched without permission.
- Bedrooms and Guest Room
The upper floor has three bedrooms: the owner’s chamber, a guest room, and a smaller room once used by the family’s children. Each has a stone hearth, a simple bed, and a rack or stand for weapons. The guest room is the most comfortable, but its narrow window overlooks the stable yard and lets in the horses’ morning noise.
- Courtyard and Stable
The L-shaped house encloses a sheltered courtyard with a well, a chopping block, and a small stable for two horses. The stable is serviceable but cramped, and the courtyard gate is heavy enough to bar against a rush of attackers. There is room here for a party to leave mounts and gear while visiting, though not for a wagon to turn around.
