Overview
Survey Tower 14 is a medium-sized observatory with two full floors and a single stone turret as its third floor. Its working rooms, modest residential quarters, dwarven shrine, and two-stall stable are arranged around a compact central stair. A small walled courtyard provides a sheltered place for horses, carts, and visitors. The main structure contains approximately 5,400 square feet across its two floors, with a 350-square-foot turret above.
Atmosphere
Quiet and studious, with the smell of lamp oil, clean stone, ink, and horse hay. At night, the turning gears of the telescope make a soft ticking sound above the sleeping rooms. The place feels welcoming to curious visitors, but its owner keeps strict hours and dislikes anyone touching the instruments.
Style
A squat, square tower of fitted gray stone, built in the practical dwarven manner with thick walls, narrow exterior windows, and a steep slate roof. The upper turret is round and noticeably older than the rest of the building. Its original name was a dwarven phrase now worn down in local speech to the simple survey designation used on the valley's old maps.
What stands out
History
The original tower was built by dwarven road engineers as a lookout and astronomical marker. Centuries later, a regional survey crew assigned it the number 14, which remained on maps after the dwarven name faded from use. A human astronomer expanded the lower building into a working observatory and added the stable and courtyard. It has passed through several careful keepers and has never been abandoned for long.
- The Observatory
The tower’s stone stair ends at a locked hatch beneath the turret’s domed roof. A brass-mounted refracting telescope points through a narrow slit that can be opened toward the northern sky. Its lenses are carefully maintained, though the mount shudders when the wind rises. The upper gallery has a hand-cranked shutter, a star chart table, and a speaking tube down to the second-floor workroom. On clear nights, the observatory is open to visitors who can pay a modest fee or bring useful news.
- The Dwarven Shrine
A compact shrine stands in a ground-floor alcove, set into masonry brought from an older dwarven road station. Its plain stone altar bears a chisel-marked image of a hammer above a mountain gate. Travelers leave a coin, a tool, or a small piece of worked stone. The resident keeper offers brief prayers for safe journeys and repairs the shrine’s lamps, but does not claim to be a priest. The altar is not magical, though a careful examination reveals a narrow hollow behind its lower stone.
- Floor Plan and Areas
Approximate enclosed area: 2,700 square feet per main floor, 5,400 total, plus a 350-square-foot turret. The courtyard and stable are outside that enclosed-area total. North is at the top. Each character represents roughly five feet. The south entrance opens from the courtyard. The stable is attached to the ground floor at the northeast corner and holds two horses.
- Access and Defenses
The turret’s roof slit can be opened from inside, but its counterweight is concealed behind a panel in the instrument workroom. A character who examines the mechanism and succeeds on a DC 13 Intelligence (Investigation) check spots the panel. The shaft behind it contains a narrow service ladder leading to the roof. The tower is a sturdy stone structure, but the slit and old roof fittings are vulnerable points during a storm or an attack from above.
