College of Philosophy

Bards of the College of Philosophy make performance of inquiry: asking pointed questions, testing assumptions, and turning an opponent’s certainty against them. They are debaters, counselors, and strategists who defend companions by exposing the flaw in a foe’s decisive moment. Their art draws on Socratic questioning, Confucian duties, Voltairean wit, Nietzschean self-overcoming, Taoist yielding, and Sun Tzu’s attention to advantage—without requiring any one doctrine to be true.

Level 3, reached
Inquiry and Interpretation
You gain proficiency in either Insight or Investigation. When you use Bardic Inspiration, you can also ask its recipient one concise question about their immediate intention or reasoning. The recipient can answer truthfully, decline, or answer in character; this has no magical compulsion.
Socratic Rebuttal
When a creature you can see within 60 feet hits you or an ally with an attack, you can take a Reaction and expend one use of Bardic Inspiration. Roll your Bardic Inspiration die and subtract the number rolled from the attack roll, potentially causing it to miss. You must use this feature after the attack roll is made but before its damage is dealt.
Level 6
The Advantage of Yielding
When your Socratic Rebuttal causes an attack to miss, choose one ally within 30 feet of the attacker who can see or hear you. That ally can use its Reaction to move up to half its Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks from the attacker. The ally must end this movement in a space it can occupy.
Level 10
Examination of Consequences
When you roll a Bardic Inspiration die for Socratic Rebuttal, you can roll the die twice and use either result. You can do so a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
Level 14
A Better Question
When you use Socratic Rebuttal and the attack misses, you can expend one use of Bardic Inspiration to turn the moment into a lesson. Choose up to a number of allies equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum one) within 60 feet who can see or hear you. Each chosen ally gains Temporary Hit Points equal to your Bard level + your Charisma modifier and can immediately stand up from Prone without spending movement. Once you use this benefit, you can't use it again until you finish a Long Rest.
