Engineers are artificers who turn careful planning into practical field devices. Their bombs, emergency restoratives, and disposable armor plates are built to work under pressure, even when made from scavenged materials. An Engineer’s niche is flexible, limited-use support: dependable bursts of damage, healing, or protection, with improving reliability as their craft advances.

You gain proficiency with three types of artisan’s tools of your choice. If you already have proficiency with a chosen tool, choose another artisan’s tools instead. You also gain proficiency in Nature. You learn to make field devices. At the end of a Long Rest, prepare a number of devices equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of one). Each device is expended when used, and you can have no more prepared than this maximum. As an action, use one prepared device and choose one effect: Bomb: throw it at a point you can see within 60 feet. Each creature in a 5-foot-radius sphere must make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC, taking 2d6 fire or thunder damage (your choice when you use it) on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Restorative: a creature within 5 feet regains 1d8 + your Intelligence modifier hit points. Armor Patch: a creature within 5 feet gains temporary hit points equal to 1d8 + your Intelligence modifier and a +1 bonus to AC until the start of your next turn. A creature can benefit from only one Armor Patch at a time. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest. You can expend a prepared device only when you use this feature.
Your builds hold together under rough handling. When a creature fails its saving throw against your Bomb, the damage increases by 1d6. Your Restorative restores additional hit points equal to your proficiency bonus. In addition, you gain proficiency with Nature if you do not already have it, and proficiency with two additional types of artisan’s tools of your choice.
You can prepare more devices and make their effects more dependable. Your maximum number of prepared devices increases by your proficiency bonus. When you finish a Short or Long Rest, you can replace any number of your prepared devices with other device types. The Bomb’s damage increases by 1d6, and the Restorative’s healing die becomes a d10.
You have perfected your emergency prototypes. Once on each of your turns when you use Field Devices, you can use the device as a Bonus Action instead of an action. The Bomb’s radius becomes 10 feet, and its damage increases by 1d6. A Restorative can also end one of these conditions on its target: Blinded, Deafened, or Poisoned. An Armor Patch grants temporary hit points equal to 2d8 + your Intelligence modifier, and its AC bonus lasts until the start of your next turn as before.
IntelligenceConstitutionHit pointsAs an Artificer; this subclass does not change your Hit Die or hit points.
Saving throwsAs an Artificer. Your Field Devices use your Artificer spell save DC for saving throws.
TrainingYou gain proficiency with three artisan’s tools of your choice at 3rd level, plus two more at 6th level. You gain Nature proficiency at 3rd level if you lack it. You retain your Artificer’s other proficiencies.

ResourceField Devices: a limited-use pool equal to your proficiency bonus per Long Rest, with prepared devices limited by your Intelligence modifier (minimum one), increased at 10th level.
MulticlassingUse the multiclassing rules for Artificer. Field Devices use your Intelligence modifier and proficiency bonus; your spell save DC is the same as your Artificer spell save DC. Subclass features do not grant additional spell slots.
You use the Artificer’s spellcasting rules and spell slots.
Field Devices are non-spell effects and do not expend spell slots; they use the limited-use pool described in the subclass features.

You are a flexible support specialist with a small reserve of prepared devices.
Decide whether the group needs damage, emergency healing, or a brief defensive edge before spending a use. Your improvements reward planning, but Field Refitting lets you adjust your loadout after a short rest.
Most Engineers begin as Artificer apprentices, toolmakers, medics, or repair workers.
Their initiation is practical: build a device from limited supplies, demonstrate that it works safely, then prove it can be maintained and adapted in the field.
Ordinary people often see Engineers as useful problem-solvers, especially after a device saves a life or repairs a vital tool.
Their bombs can make communities wary, and failed experiments tend to be remembered longer than quiet successes.
