Vannia's Drowned Crypt
Where the lake took the champion, the dead kept the vow.
This drowned crypt-temple was built to honor a forgotten champion of Vannia, Lady of the Lake, then sealed after the champion's death turned to blight. Now the lower halls are half-flooded, half-buried, and haunted by those who refuse to let the vow rest. The deeper chambers hold the champion's final rites, but the water has learned to hunger there.
Cold water drips through cracked stone, and the air carries old incense, wet earth, and the faint tang of rusted iron. Torchlight gutters against black mildew and salt-stained carvings, while distant chanting seems to rise and fall like waves under the floor. Every corridor feels watched, as if the lake itself remembers the dead here.
☠ Threat
The champion interred below has risen as a wrathful, water-bound guardian, twisted by an oath it can no longer complete. Its sorrow fuels the undead in the halls, and the temple's stagnant spring magnifies every death, making the crypt increasingly hostile the deeper intruders go.
History
Centuries ago, a lake-born knight sworn to Vannia defended a sacred crossing and won renown for returning the drowned to shore. After the champion died in the last battle, the shrine-priests interred the body beneath a temple crypt and sealed the lower vaults when miracles curdled into hauntings. Over time, the waters rose, the prayers faded, and the place became a forgotten warning.
Encounter Table
CRA pair of drowned rats or a lone corpse-hound slips through broken drains, drawn by warmth and blood.
A soaked acolyte ghost moans fragments of prayer and lashes out at the living with cold hands.
A rusted temple guard patrols the corridors in silence, stopping to listen at doors before striking.
A swarm of pale leeches writhes through standing water and climbs boots in a hungry mass.
Rumours & Whispers
They say the crypt was flooded on purpose because something in the chapel would not stay dead.
Old fishers claim blue lights move beneath the lake on moonless nights and gather at the ruins.
A priest in town swears the champion still guards a treasure, but only if you speak the right prayer.
People who camp near the ruins hear armor walking under the water after midnight.
