Read Aloud
The pipes cut off as the grass folds flat around your boots. Under the wide skylight, a satyr lowers his instrument and three nymphs block the only bare path through the meadow. The satyr points to the ground and says, “Choose what you will, then tell me who pays when it goes wrong.”
The Scene
NEUTRALA guarded moral test beneath an open skyBase DC 20Stakes The party can pass through the trail of Pan with the chamber's blessing, or force the way and make the next chamber more deadly.
20 to 35 minutes
NPC Goal
Shed wants the party to name a freedom they will deliberately limit for the sake of others, then accept the cost without treating restraint as defeat.
Leverage
The guardians want the trail of Pan completed, but they cannot open the way for anyone who treats freedom as exemption from consequence.
Player Approaches
- Offer a real plan for repairing harm caused by the party.
- Admit a past choice that hurt others and name the cost still owed.
- Give another person the final say when the party could seize control.
- Refuse an easy advantage because taking it would endanger someone else.
NPC Gambits
- Ask each guardian what freedom has cost them.
- Place a weapon, spell focus, or treasured item on the grass and explain why it will not be used.
- State a choice, its likely harm, and who will bear that harm.
- Challenge the test by accepting its result without demanding an exception.
NPC Reactions
- A boast earns silence and a harder question.
- A clever loophole earns one failure unless the speaker also names the harm it causes.
- A plain admission of fault earns cautious respect.
- A promise to protect everyone earns no credit unless the party explains what they will do when protection becomes impossible.
