Get the Mothers Off Bone Cart Road
Read Aloud
Three gnoll females lie across the road, panting, bleeding, and snarling whenever anyone comes close. One claws at the dirt and points toward the ditch, where a dead cart horse has blocked the only shade. The largest gnoll bares her teeth and says, “Help us now, or leave us to die.”

Ketta Road-Mother wants the three mothers and their unborn pups moved into cover before the patrol reaches Bone Cart Road. She will bargain, lie, and threaten, but she will not abandon them.
The party can offer water, healing, safe passage, or a promise to hide the gnolls from the patrol. Ketta knows a shortcut around the next checkpoint.
- Offer food or water without drawing steel.
- Use Medicine, Animal Handling, or Persuasion to calm the laboring gnolls.
- Name the grain-cart raid and demand the truth.
- Promise a safe place in exchange for the gnolls leaving the road.
- Threaten them, but accept that fear advances the failure clock.
- Kneel sideways instead of standing over them.
- Assign one character to block distant travelers.
- Ask what each mother needs before asking who caused the trouble.
- Move the group into the shade one body at a time.
- Let Ketta choose which gnoll receives help first.
- A calm offer of water earns one honest answer.
- Healing a mother makes Ketta lower her weapon and count the party among the living.
- Mentioning the grain raid makes Ketta defensive but truthful.
- Drawing weapons makes every gnoll crawl toward the ditch and advances one failure.
- A promise of shelter earns Ketta's shortcut and a warning about the patrol.
