The Gate Before Nightfall
Read Aloud
The forest ends all at once, and open plains roll toward a walled city less than an hour away. A tired guard raises a spear from the roadside checkpoint and shouts, "Stop there. Nobody enters from those woods without answering for what followed them out." Behind the checkpoint, a bloodied courier stirs beneath a canvas tarp.

NPC Goal
Sergeant Mara Venn wants the gate secure, her guards alive, and her brother's involvement kept out of the city records.
Leverage
The party has the courier's evidence, visible proof of surviving the forest, and enough strength to make the checkpoint nervous.
Player Approaches
- Show the courier's sealed message.
- Offer healing or protection for the wounded courier.
- Name a city faction that can vouch for the party.
- Point out the approaching riders without drawing weapons.
- Ask the sergeant what would make entry lawful.
NPC Gambits
- Separate the sergeant from the younger guards for a private word.
- Let the most trustworthy-looking character answer first.
- Trade information for immediate passage.
- Invite the guards to inspect the party's packs.
- Challenge the sergeant to choose public safety over personal loyalty.
NPC Reactions
- Helpful honesty earns a clipped nod and one free success.
- A credible offer of aid shifts Mara to FRIENDLY.
- Threats make Mara call for the gate winch and shift to HOSTILE.
- Mentioning her brother makes her defensive, but careful sympathy creates an opening.
- If the party protects the courier without lying, Mara lets them pass and quietly asks for the evidence.
