Whispers in the Galleries
Read Aloud
Boots strike stone somewhere below. Kaelen pulls the ledger tight to her chest while Vexia watches every stair and every shadow. In three rounds, the Tribunal will reach this gallery, and neither scholar expects mercy.
The Scene
NEUTRALUrgent witness extractionBase DC 14Stakes The forged seal can expose the cathedral's conspiracy, but the Tribunal will destroy the evidence and silence the witnesses if they are caught.
3 to 5 rounds, or 10 to 15 minutes of table time
NPC Goal
Kaelen wants the forged-seal proof delivered to someone who can expose the conspiracy. Vexia wants to survive long enough to guide the group to the hidden docks.
Leverage
The party can offer safe passage, display authority, expose the forged seal, promise revenge on the conspirators, or threaten to leave the scholars behind.
Player Approaches
- Promise Kaelen protection for her coded ledger.
- Offer Vexia a route to the hidden docks beneath the cathedral.
- Use a Tribunal document, insignia, or convincing forged writ.
- Reveal that the agents are searching for forbidden records, not justice.
- Point out that staying together gives both witnesses a better chance to survive.
NPC Gambits
- Persuasion: Give a specific escape plan and swear to protect the evidence.
- Deception: Claim the western stairs are already compromised and redirect the witnesses east.
- Intimidation: Force immediate movement by making the Tribunal threat feel real.
- Insight: Address Kaelen's fear of being silenced or Vexia's fear of betrayal.
- Investigation: Identify a concealed service passage behind the statue alcoves.
- Sleight of Hand or Arcana: Hide, copy, or protect the ledger while the scholars move.
NPC Reactions
- Kaelen answers in clipped whispers and asks who sent the party.
- Vexia tests every promise with a practical question about the escape route.
- A clear plan earns cooperation; vague heroics make both scholars pull back.
- Mentioning the hidden docks makes Vexia take the lead.
- Threatening to abandon either witness shifts the disposition to HOSTILE.
