NPC Goal
Get the party through the bathhouse route, then have them help free her brother from the bell tower.
Leverage
The party can offer help for Mara's brother, return the silver key if they have it, or prove they are not working for the spider cult.
Player Approaches
- Show weapons lowered and keep hands visible.
- Offer food, medicine, or a promise to rescue Mara's brother.
- Point out that the cult will kill Mara once she is no longer useful.
- Name a shared enemy or give a clear reason for entering the ruins.
- Ask Mara what safe passage would cost instead of demanding it.
NPC Gambits
- Ask direct questions about the streets and the webbing.
- Trade a useful promise for each piece of information.
- Let the quietest party member speak first.
- Offer to take the dangerous rear position.
- Call Mara's bluff about the crossbow without threatening her.
NPC Reactions
- Friendly: Mara lowers the crossbow and gives short, practical directions.
- Uncertain: Mara asks who sent the party and watches for lies.
- Threatened: Mara whistles once; hidden lookouts begin moving through the ruins.
- Offered help: Mara admits her brother is alive and gives the party one chance to prove it.
- Caught lying: Mara stops negotiating and points toward the most dangerous street.
