The Larks
House Resalia was a minor but respected noble house, known for loyalty to the Crown, careful oathkeeping, open-handed relief, and competent administration. Alenna's father governed with a strong sense of duty and compassion, though his work often kept him emotionally absent from his daughter. Alenna's mother died when she was young, leaving her with few memories beyond her father's recollections of her beauty, intelligence, and moral clarity. After Alenna's father died suddenly five years ago, Alenna was the only living heir. Odren, away on a long inspection with his ranger mentor, returned after the funeral. The death had been handled hastily, with no adequate postmortem examination or thorough inquiry. Odren and his mentor suspected foul play but found no proof. Soon afterward, a more powerful noble house claimed that weakened Resalia could no longer govern its domains properly. Through political maneuvering, House Resalia lost nearly all its lands. The Crown allowed it to retain Hengecarn, a strategically important town whose resources, steam-energy works, and engineering shops made it too valuable to abandon, but whose remote position, surrounding wilderness, and proximity to a hostile country made it costly to defend. The Crown-approved fiduciary administrator managed Hengecarn during Alenna's studies abroad. Alenna wrote to Odren that she would return in five years and expected him at her side. During that separation, Odren learned that his ranger mentor had once belonged to the Kais, a mystic knight order scattered after the last Dark War. The mentor trained him more severely, awakening abilities that seem beyond ordinary skill. At the final test, Odren refused to surrender the Resalia badge on which he had sworn loyalty. Instead, he burned his beloved first book. His mentor approved: the trial had tested whether he would give up his own identity merely to satisfy a command. Alenna and Jessa returned by ship through Guvian port and reunited with Odren. Their renewed oath felt effortless, though none of them was unchanged. On the road to Hengecarn, armed attackers struck their small convoy. Jessa and Odren defeated them, and Alenna revealed a measure of her own magical power. The circumstances suggested an attempted assassination disguised as robbery. The three resolved that Alenna would not travel unescorted. This ambush is the watershed that turned their childhood promise into an active struggle for the survival of House Resalia.

The circumstances suggested an attempted assassination disguised as robbery. The three resolved that Alenna would not travel unescorted. This ambush is the watershed that turned their childhood promise into an active struggle for the survival of House Resalia.
How it began
The Larks began in a summer camp, when a lonely young Alenna Resalia mistook Odren Eoltdeor for another bully and answered his friendly approach with sharp words. Odren had found a tree house in the nearby wood and offered it as a refuge. When other children came to harass Alenna, Odren stood between them and her; Jessa Blacnea joined the defense. The three made the tree house their private meeting place and turned a difficult summer into the beginning of a chosen family. Alenna's father, moved by their genuine affection, took the orphaned Odren and Jessa into House Resalia's protection, provided an education, and gave them places in the household. Before Alenna departed for Dessi with Jessa, the three swore to meet again, remain loyal, and protect one another. Alenna gave each friend a Resalia badge as a token of the oath. Years later, with their house diminished and Alenna returning to Hengecarn, that childhood promise became a practical and dangerous compact: three people trying to preserve a family, a town, and the truth.
How to know them
Resalia silver, Lark-sky blue, Birch white
- A quartered Resalia crest bearing an eight-pointed silver star, a flying lark, a birch, and a second eight-pointed silver star.
- Small silver badges carried by Jessa and Odren, given to them by Alenna before the trio separated.
- A lark in flight, used informally as a sign of frank speech, safe return, and remembered promises.
Standing
What they say they want
What they are doing now
Where it leads
Make Hengecarn secure, prosperous, and fairly governed without sacrificing the character that made House Resalia respected. If the truth allows it, restore the Resalia name and recover enough political standing to prevent another powerful house from taking what remains. Alenna's private hope is that her father's legacy can be vindicated through the quality of her rule, not merely through reclaimed territory.
How others see them
To many Hengecarn residents, the Larks are a fragile return of the old Resalia household: a young lady, her loyal childhood companions, and a family badge associated with service and fair dealing. Some admire their courage; others see sheltered aristocrats who have yet to understand how much the town changed during their absence. Outside Hengecarn, they are a minor political nuisance at best and a dangerous source of embarrassing questions at worst.
People
3 ranks
Lady of House Resalia and hereditary ruler of Hengecarn
Reserved, intelligent, conscientious, and deeply principled. She is compassionate but can overthink decisions until the moment for action passes. Her anger at the rival house is real, but she fears becoming cruel or vain in the name of justice. Around Odren she can become awkwardly formal or teasing when her hidden feelings unsettle her.
- Lady of the House1 member
Alenna holds the hereditary claim, speaks for House Resalia, makes final decisions on estate policy, and bears responsibility for the town's defense and welfare. The Larks advise her but cannot overrule her.
- Oath Companions2 members
Jessa and Odren serve as Alenna's closest confidants, protectors, investigators, and practical advisers. They divide duties by temperament rather than formal rank: Jessa is direct and outward-facing, while Odren handles observation, wilderness work, and quiet security.
- Odren Eoltdeor Oath Companion, scout, tracker, and discreet protector
- Jessa Blacnea Oath Companion, confidante, escort, and martial trainer
- Household and Estate Staff1 member
A small, changing staff keeps the residence and records functioning. They are not all sworn Larks, and their loyalties and access must be earned rather than assumed.
How they are organised
- The core Larks are Alenna, Odren, and Jessa; membership is rooted in their childhood oath and cannot be casually granted.
- Any additional sworn member must earn the trust of all three through demonstrated honesty, discretion, and willingness to protect Hengecarn's people rather than only the Resalia family.
- A candidate must understand that service is not a license to command townspeople or use the House's name for personal advantage.
- The oath is not a magical contract and creates no automatic legal authority. Any supernatural effect associated with it is uncertain and treated as a possible custom feature, not a guaranteed game rule.
Relations
8 factionsThe Crown preserved Hengecarn for House Resalia when other Resalia lands were stripped away. Its officials still recognize Alenna's title, but support depends on her proving that she can govern the town and its exposed frontier.
Operations
What they do
How they do it
Services for hire
- Household audienceA credible reason, a useful service to Hengecarn, or a personal favor owedAlenna can arrange an audience with estate officials or provide limited access to household records, provided the request does not compromise residents or active inquiries.
- Wilderness guidanceTrust and a clear safety purposeOdren can help assess a trail, locate a missing traveler, or guide a small group through familiar wilderness. He will not treat people or animals as disposable tools.
- Protective trainingA frank conversation and willingness to accept practical adviceJessa can teach basic self-defense, help prepare a household for an attack, or accompany a vulnerable person through a tense public setting.

Headquarters
HengecarnTheir working headquarters is the Resalia residence in Hengecarn, a once-proud manor now strained by years of uncertain management. The Larks use a small map room for household decisions, a cramped records room to compare estate accounts, and a modest yard where Jessa drills anyone willing to learn basic defense. The old tree house from their childhood is not their base, but its location remains a private touchstone from which the friends take courage.
Lands they hold
Outposts
- The return routeThe road between Guvian port and HengecarnA watched travel corridor where the Larks seek witnesses, assess vulnerable stretches, and learn whether the ambush was planned locally.
- The outer tracksThe surrounding wilderness near HengecarnNot a formal outpost, but familiar ground for Odren's scouting and for checking approaches that ordinary patrols rarely cover.
Secrets
Plot hooks
6 hooks- 1The Page That Was Torn OutPersonal to local; investigation, social pressure, and a credible threat to a witnessReward: Evidence, household trust, and access to Hengecarn's recordsA junior clerk finds a missing page in the estate accounts that appears to connect a shipment from Hengecarn to the week Alenna's father fell ill. The clerk asks the characters for protection before bringing it to Alenna.
- 2A Fault in the WorksLocal; investigation, negotiation, and a practical industrial hazardReward: Local support, useful contacts, and safer access to the worksA worker is injured at a steam-energy installation just as Alenna arrives to inspect it. The administrator's records blame careless labor, while the workers claim that a safety measure was deliberately removed. Resolving the dispute without shutting down an essential operation tests Alenna's values and the party's judgment.
- 3The Survivor on the RoadLocal to regional; protection, interrogation, and political consequencesReward: A lead on the assassination attempt and leverage in a political disputeOne of the ambushers is found alive, frightened, and willing to speak only if the party can get them out of Hengecarn. Their account may identify a paymaster, but it may also be a trap designed to provoke Alenna into accusing the wrong house.
- 4Two Fires at HengecarnRegional; coordinated crisis response with meaningful tradeoffsReward: Public confidence, military support, or preservation of vital infrastructureA border alarm draws Hengecarn's limited defenders toward a remote approach. At the same time, a dangerous failure threatens the town's energy works. The Larks cannot be in both places, and whichever crisis the party handles will shape how residents judge Alenna.
- 5What the Kais Left BehindCampaign-scale; wilderness exploration, dangerous history, and a choice about what to revealReward: Knowledge of the Kais, a potential ally, and insight into Odren's powersA surviving member of the Kais offers Odren information about his abilities in exchange for help recovering an object left from the order's destruction. The object could clarify the mentor's past, but it may also reveal why the Kais were targeted.
- 6The Price of a PetitionCampaign-scale; political negotiation, evidence gathering, and an ethical choiceReward: A possible path to restored lands, Crown favor, or proof of a wider conspiracyA Crown official offers Alenna a chance to contest part of the lost Resalia estate, but demands that she publicly condemn the former administrator and cease investigating her father's death. The offer may be a genuine political bargain or an attempt to separate Alenna from her strongest allies.
