The Split Service

Locals call the giant the Split Service, a phrase first used after it served two feuding customers at once: a flawless black espresso to one and a sparkling rainbow concoction to the other. The name stuck, and the giant seems pleased by it. Its two heads rarely agree on recipes, but together they can manage a machine with uncanny precision.

Two Heads. The giant has advantage on initiative rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks. It can't be surprised while conscious. This is a custom adaptation of an ettin's two-headed vigilance.
Divided Attention. The giant has advantage on saving throws against being Blinded, Charmed, Deafened, Frightened, Stunned, or knocked Unconscious. If one head is distracted by a performance or a fascinating mechanism, the giant has disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on noticing other things until the start of its next turn.

Actions

Portafilter Smash. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 () bludgeoning damage. The attack can be a wrenching swing of its oversized portafilter or a slam with its steel milk pitcher.
Prismatic Pour. Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 13 () radiant damage. On a hit, the target is splashed with clinging, luminous syrup and sheds dim light in a 5-foot radius until the end of the giant's next turn.
Multiattack. The giant makes two Portafilter Smash attacks. It can replace one attack with a Prismatic Pour attack.
Pressure Release (Recharge 5-6). The giant sprays boiling espresso in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 18 () fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The area is slick with coffee until the start of the giant's next turn. A creature that enters the area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or have the Prone condition. The giant can't use this action again until it finishes a short or long rest.

Reactions

Counter-Service Deflection. When a creature the giant can see hits it with a melee attack while within 10 feet, the giant adds 2 to its AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. The giant must be able to bring its portafilter or pitcher to bear.

Gear

  • Industrial Espresso Machine (Equipment, 250 gp)Oversized chrome brewing apparatus that vents steam and pressure. It is installed behind the café counter and is not normally carried.
  • Floating Jewel Cup (Wondrous object, 75 gp)A levitating, jewel-encrusted cup used as the focus for its prismatic drink magic. It is fragile and worth more as a collectible than as a weapon.
  • Oversized Portafilter (Weapon, 25 gp)A massive steel portafilter used as an improvised club.

Notes for the game master

The Split Service is a custom CR 4 reskin of an ettin, not an official D&D monster.
Its two heads are represented by its vigilance trait and Multiattack, not by separate turns.
Pressure Release is a custom feature. The espresso machine is part of the encounter and is not required for the giant's other attacks.

Tactics

  1. Opening

It demands that intruders leave the service area. If they approach the machine or floating cup, it attacks with a portafilter and sends a prismatic shot at anyone hanging back.

  2. Mid-fight

It uses Multiattack to pressure nearby foes, mixing in Prismatic Pour against a distant or exposed target. It uses Pressure Release when enemies cluster in front of the counter.

  3. End of the fight

If badly hurt, it vents the machine's pressure release to scatter pursuers, then tries to retreat through a service door while the serious head protects the other.

  4. Retreat

The heads argue about whether to defend the café or save the equipment. The giant retreats if reduced to 25 hit points or fewer, unless someone threatens its treasured floating cup.

How it fights

Use the counter as half cover when it can do so without obstructing its attacks.
The serious head watches flanks while the fanciful head targets distant foes with Prismatic Pour.
Use Pressure Release only when it can catch multiple opponents or clear a path.

Who it attacks first

Creatures tampering with or threatening the espresso machine.
Melee attackers crowding the service counter.
Ranged attackers who remain outside the giant's reach.

Works well with

Works well with café staff or security constructs that funnel intruders toward the counter.
A cramped kitchen enhances its reach and pressure-release threat, while a wide dining room gives characters more room to spread out.

How to beat it

Keep distance from the pressure-release cone and avoid clustering in front of the counter.
Use ranged attacks or reach weapons to challenge it without entering its preferred melee range.
Spread out to reduce the impact of its area attack.
Exploit its divided attention with distractions, decoys, or a convincing request to inspect the machine.

Ways to avoid a fight

The serious head can diagnose mechanical problems with an espresso machine, though it expects payment in quality beans or useful parts.
The fanciful head can prepare a dazzling, nonmagical drink for guests who approach politely.
The two heads can be persuaded to mediate a dispute if each side agrees to order a different drink.

Ecology

A Large, broad-shouldered two-headed giant in a spotless white service coat, its sleeves rolled above arms dusted with coffee grounds. One head has a furrowed brow and watches a hissing espresso machine with exacting focus. The other wears a delighted, fanciful smile, barely attending to a jewel-encrusted cup that floats amid rainbow light and fizzing sparks. Stark neon glints off chrome counters, polished horns, and the giant's mismatched eyes.

Behavior

One head is meticulous and easily distracted by faulty equipment; the other is whimsical, improvisational, and keen to show off the rainbow drink. They bicker aloud, but instinctively coordinate in a fight. The giant prefers warnings and nonlethal intimidation unless its café, machine, or cup is endangered.

How it lives

The Split Service is an unusual giant adapted to urban hospitality districts, often employed or tolerated by a café that can provide industrial equipment and an endless supply of ingredients. It needs ordinary food and drink, though it treats coffee preparation as a craft bordering on ritual.

Lair

Its preferred lair is the kitchen and service area of a brightly lit urban café. Chrome counters provide half cover, while the espresso machine can provide the giant's pressure-release attack. The space is usually immaculate except for scattered coffee grounds and iridescent droplets.

Habitat
Urban, especially futuristic cafés, food courts, hotel kitchens, and commercial arcades.

Signs that it is near

The sharp scent of espresso and hot metal.
A trail of rainbow-colored droplets that shimmer under white light.
The hiss of steam followed by two heads arguing about grind size.

Lore

Locals call the giant the Split Service, a phrase first used after it served two feuding customers at once: a flawless black espresso to one and a sparkling rainbow concoction to the other. The name stuck, and the giant seems pleased by it. Its two heads rarely agree on recipes, but together they can manage a machine with uncanny precision.

What drives it

To perfect its espresso and invent increasingly spectacular drinks, while keeping the café and its equipment safe from careless visitors.

After the fight

When defeated, the giant's espresso machine vents in a final sigh of steam, while the levitating cup settles gently onto the counter. Its rainbow contents remain harmlessly effervescent for a few minutes.

“The name stuck, and the giant seems pleased by it.”
From its lore

Variants

The Night Shift serves a dim café and replaces Prismatic Pour's radiant damage with cold damage, its drink glowing blue-white.
The Festival Special conjures a brighter, more volatile cup. Its Prismatic Pour deals fire damage instead of radiant damage.

How to use it

Use it as a territorial but negotiable obstacle in a neon café, transit concourse, or corporate food court.
Make the espresso machine and floating cup focal points of a fight, with counters and slick floors creating clear tactical features.
Let the party resolve the conflict by ordering, repairing the machine, or protecting the café from a greater threat.

A sealed case of rare coffee beans worth 50 gp.
A small set of high-quality brewing tools worth 25 gp.
