Pale Seam

The archive's handwritten observations describe a dark, spherical asteroid fragment and a creature that slept beside it. Recent entries insist that the fragment has changed shape, though earlier diagrams disagree about where the cracks were. The stalker may be a guardian altered by the fragment, an intruder that emerged from it, or an echo shaped by the observers' expectations. The notes never settle the question.

Passive Perception20
Archive Stillness. The stalker has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide among shelves, stone, or machinery. While motionless, it is indistinguishable from a pale mineral sculpture unless observed closely.
Fragment-Warped. The stalker has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects. This custom trait does not grant immunity to any spell.
Pale Sight. The stalker can see normally in magical and nonmagical darkness, out to 30 feet. Its truesight is limited to 30 feet.
Legendary Resistance. The stalker has three legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. It regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Actions

Multiattack. The stalker makes three attacks, in any combination of Needle Claw and Fragment Lance.
Needle Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 () slashing damage plus 7 () psychic damage. If the target is Large or smaller, it must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pulled up to 10 feet toward the stalker.
Fragment Lance. Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 27 () force damage. The target cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn. This is a custom magical attack, not a spell.
Pale Rupture. Recharge 5–6. The stalker releases a pulse of pale light in a 30-foot-radius sphere centered on itself. Each creature of its choice in that area must make a Constitution saving throw, taking 36 () force damage and becoming restrained until the end of its next turn on a failed save, or half as much damage with no restraint on a success. A restrained creature can use its action to repeat the save, ending the restraint on a success. The pulse passes around total cover but not through it.

Reactions

Crack the Angle. When a creature the stalker can see hits it with an attack, the stalker reduces the damage by 12 (after applying resistance, if any), then moves up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. It cannot use this reaction while incapacitated.

Legendary Actions

Shelf-Step. The stalker moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Needle of Light. The stalker makes one Fragment Lance attack.
Pinned Measure (costs 2 actions). One creature the stalker can see within 30 feet must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or have its speed reduced to 0 until the end of its next turn, as pale lines briefly pin its shadow in place. This is a custom magical effect.
Role
Mobile solo controller and guardian
Built for
Four characters of 13th level; a challenging solo encounter, especially with archive cover and tactical play.

Gear

  • Spherical fragment (Environmental object, Unpriced)A dark, nearly spherical asteroid fragment. It is an environmental object, not equipment; its changing properties are deliberately left mysterious.

Notes for the game master

Custom monster designed for D&D 5th Edition, calibrated as a CR 13 solo threat.
The stalker is not a spellcaster. Fragment Lance and its other supernatural effects are custom features.
The archive and fragment have no additional mechanical effects unless the GM chooses to introduce them.

Tactics

  1. Opening

Remain motionless among the shelves until a creature nears the spherical fragment or disturbs the observations. Open with Pale Rupture if several intruders are grouped; otherwise target the most dangerous-looking intruder with Fragment Lance.

  2. Mid-fight

Use Fragment Lance to punish distant or exposed targets, then close on a restrained or isolated foe with Needle Claw. Reposition around shelves to break lines of sight.

  3. End of the fight

At low hit points, use Pale Rupture to interrupt pursuers, then retreat through shelves or a narrow doorway. It fights to protect the fragment, not to pursue fleeing intruders.

  4. Retreat

The stalker does not surrender. If reduced to 30 hit points or fewer and the fragment is not directly threatened, it withdraws toward the fragment and uses the shelves as cover. It will not willingly leave the archive.

How it fights

Stay mobile, using shelves and ceiling routes to avoid being surrounded.
Do not spend Pale Rupture against a single isolated opponent unless restraint would prevent a decisive threat.
Use legendary actions between turns to maintain pressure and reposition.
If an intruder is close to the fragment, prioritize that creature even if another target appears more vulnerable.

Who it attacks first

Creatures touching or attempting to remove the spherical fragment.
Characters altering, destroying, or carrying away the handwritten observations.
Ranged attackers with a clear line of sight.
Isolated creatures that can be pulled away from allies.

Works well with

Narrow shelf aisles let the stalker break sight lines and exploit its climbing movement.
Allies that restrain or slow intruders make Pale Rupture and Needle Claw more threatening; no allies are assumed in the base encounter.
The archive's written clues support investigation and negotiation before or during combat.

How to beat it

Spread out to reduce the number of creatures caught by Pale Rupture.
Use total cover against Fragment Lance, which requires a clear path to its target.
A successful Strength save resists the pull of Needle Claw.
A successful Constitution save avoids the restraint from Pale Rupture.
The stalker has no damage vulnerability; conventional attacks and control effects work normally.

Ways to avoid a fight

The stalker can be distracted by placing a new observation or diagram near the fragment, buying time for careful movement through the archive.
It may permit a character who approaches slowly and does not touch the fragment to examine the shelves.
A character who compares several handwritten observations may learn that the fragment's apparent changes are inconsistent, providing a clue that it affects perception as well as matter.

Ecology

A tall, narrow-limbed thing with the proportions of a person stretched on a rack. Its skin is chalk-pale and translucent at the joints, with thin lines of cold light running beneath it. Its head is a smooth wedge split by a vertical seam; when it turns, the seam opens onto a dark, spherical glimmer like the asteroid fragment in the archive. Its fingers end in hooked, glassy points that leave no scratches, only a faintly luminous dust.

Behavior

It moves only when attention shifts away from it. It studies intruders with small, precise movements, then attacks without warning if they approach the fragment, alter the records, or bring bright light near the cracks. It displays no interest in food or ordinary valuables.

How it lives

The creature requires no food, water, or air. It remains close to the fragment and appears to draw stability from its pale emissions. Its presence is associated with subtle changes in the stone and with observations that become inaccurate between readings.

Lair

The sealed archive behind the secret western door from the lobby of Skullfall Station. Shelves form close aisles around the dark spherical fragment, whose cracks leak thin, pale light. The room is not automatically a lair with additional lair actions.

Habitat
Dungeon, especially sealed archives, asteroid vaults, and abandoned stations.

Signs that it is near

Thin pale lines appear across the fragment in different places between observations.
Dust on the archive floor ends in narrow trails that stop abruptly beside the shelves.
Handwritten measurements disagree about the fragment's size and the number of cracks.
A faint mineral smell lingers near a shelf where no stone is stored.

Lore

The archive's handwritten observations describe a dark, spherical asteroid fragment and a creature that slept beside it. Recent entries insist that the fragment has changed shape, though earlier diagrams disagree about where the cracks were. The stalker may be a guardian altered by the fragment, an intruder that emerged from it, or an echo shaped by the observers' expectations. The notes never settle the question.

What drives it

Keep intruders from disturbing the fragment and the records that document its changes.

After the fight

When the stalker dies, its light gutters into hairline seams across the spherical fragment. The fragment remains intact, but its faint glow shifts to follow the nearest warm body for a few seconds. The archive's notes may then reveal whether the rock was changing the creature, or whether the creature was teaching the rock to change.

From its lore

Variants

The Indexer: A variant that marks intruders with drifting lines of light and prioritizes anyone who carries written records away.
The Unmeasured: A variant whose apparent size shifts between observations; keep its combat statistics unchanged and express the effect through descriptions and clues.

Hooks

Plot hooks

One handwritten observation describes a change that has not happened yet, in the writer's own hand.
The fragment's cracks shift whenever a particular sealed file is opened.
A missing archivist's name appears in the notes, followed by several pages in handwriting that imitates theirs.
The stalker may have once been a station researcher, but the archive contains no reliable record of its transformation.

How to use it

Use as a solo guardian in the archive for a high-level party, with shelves providing cover and limiting clear firing lanes.
Let players discover the handwritten observations before the stalker attacks, so the changing fragment is a mystery as well as a combat objective.
For a more dangerous arena, make a few shelves unstable, but telegraph their collapse with groaning supports and drifting dust.
The creature's goal is to protect the fragment. Negotiation, distraction, or a careful retreat can end the encounter without killing it.

Treasure

The archive contains handwritten observations, diagrams, and station records of potential investigative value.
A small pouch of assorted station scrip and archival keys may be found among the shelves, at the GM's discretion.
The stalker's glassy claws crumble into pale dust when removed, with no reliable market value.
