Tactics

  1. Opening

The Avatar rises from the Nexus floor and immediately closes on the nearest cluster of intruders. It uses Elemental Overload when multiple enemies enter its reach, while the altar-light brightens around it.

  2. Mid-fight

It focuses repeated slams on the most dangerous nearby combatant and uses Surge Step to cross the battlefield or reach a creature threatening an altar. It channels Altar Flare against exposed foes.

  3. End of the fight

As its defenses begin to fail, the Avatar uses Elemental Overload when it can catch several foes, then targets isolated creatures with Leyline Slam. It does not flee while tethered to the altars.

  4. Retreat

The Avatar has no morale and cannot retreat from the Dawn Nexus while its tether remains. If all six altars are destroyed or deactivated, it continues fighting as its resistances collapse and the Nexus drains its power.

How it fights

Stay close enough to active altars to threaten characters attempting to disable them.
Use Surge Step to reposition around frontline defenders and reach vulnerable targets.
Use Elemental Overload when several characters are within its radius.
Exploit its reach to threaten characters who approach the altar stations.

Who it attacks first

Creatures actively attacking or deactivating an altar
Clustered characters within range of Elemental Overload
The nearest dangerous combatant

Works well with

The altar network provides the Avatar with its Leyline-Bound defense and enables Altar Flare.
The surrounding Nexus terrain can make its flight and teleportation especially effective, while also giving the party meaningful altar objectives.

How to beat it

Destroying or deactivating all six altars ends the Avatar’s damage resistances and deals 20 force damage to it at the start of each of its turns.
Spread out to reduce the number of creatures caught by Elemental Overload.
Use cover, mobility, and range to avoid its 15-foot-reach slams.
Protect characters attempting to interact with the altars, since Altar Flare can knock them prone.

Ways to avoid a fight

Characters can attempt to deactivate or destroy the six altars instead of concentrating all attacks on the Avatar. Adjudicate each altar interaction using the scene’s established altar rules.
If the party withdraws, the Avatar remains bound to the Dawn Nexus and does not pursue beyond its domain.

Ecology

A colossal figure of dark stone, molten gold, and translucent crystal hangs above the Nexus floor. Six bands of light orbit its torso, each pulsing in a different rhythm. Its faceless head turns toward movement with the grinding sound of a mountain shifting; the air tastes metallic, and the floor shivers under its drifting shadow.

Behavior

It moves with the certainty of a force of nature, pausing only when a leyline pulse passes through it. It does not bargain or speak. Its attention fixes on anyone disrupting the altars or threatening the Nexus.

How it lives

The Avatar is not a breeding or feeding creature. It forms where the Dawn Nexus’s power gathers into a defensive will, and persists only while its altar-tethers sustain it.

Lair

The Dawn Nexus, where the Avatar’s power runs through six altars and converges above the planetary core rift.

Habitat
The Dawn Nexus beneath Dawnvale, amid fractured platforms, luminous leyline channels, and the six altar stations.

Signs that it is near

Six streams of colored light pulse through the stone toward the altar stations.
A metallic taste spreads across the tongue as the Nexus hum rises in pitch.
Loose stones tremble and hover above the floor whenever the altars flare.

Lore

The Leyline Primordial Avatar is an optional guardian manifestation within the Dawn Nexus. It is bound to the six altars, drawing strength through their leyline connections. Disabling all six breaks its resistance to damage and steadily tears its power away, though the creature remains a lethal threat until destroyed.

What drives it

Preserve the Nexus’s current state and repel anything it perceives as a threat to its altar network.

After the fight

When the Avatar falls, the Dawn Nexus shudders as its stolen harmonics pour back into the surrounding leylines. The altars may glow with renewed stability, remain damaged, or go dark according to the party’s choices. Loose fragments of light drift through the air, then stream toward the planetary core rift as the heroes move to decide what happens next.

“It is bound to the six altars, drawing strength through their leyline connections.”
From its lore

Variants

For a less punishing encounter, run the Avatar in a later session after the party has recovered, or omit it entirely.

Hooks

Plot hooks

The heroes may choose to face the Avatar after the main confrontation at the Dawn Nexus, accepting a dangerous test of their ability to protect the altar network.
The Avatar’s defeat can change the condition of the Nexus and influence the party’s decision about whether the six altars remain as wards or are dismantled.

How to use it

Use as an optional second encounter after the confrontation with Arch-Scribe Vhaelon, not as a mandatory continuation.
The supplied encounter guidance treats this as a genuine CR 20 fight for a level 15 party, following an already-taxing CR 18 boss.
Run the battle back-to-back only if the table wants a severe gauntlet finale. Otherwise, make it a later-session epilogue encounter or omit it.
Make the six altars visible and usable as encounter objectives so players can discover the Avatar’s tether and choose whether to attack it directly or disrupt its anchors.

Treasure

The Avatar carries no conventional equipment. Any reward should arise from the party’s choices concerning the Dawn Nexus, its altars, and the planetary core rift.
