Notes for the game master

Custom D&D 5e creature based on the zombie creature type. Its statistics and features are designed for CR 1/2.
The Gutter Dead has no equipment of use and cannot speak.

Tactics

  1. Opening

It lies motionless in the gutter until a creature approaches, then lunges from the water with Sodden Slam.

  2. Mid-fight

It uses Sodden Slam to knock a target prone, then crawls in to use Gutter Drag against them.

  3. End of the fight

If badly damaged, it clutches a target and drags them toward a flooded recess or narrow passage, then continues attacking.

  4. Retreat

It does not retreat or feel fear. If its quarry escapes its reach, it resumes crawling along the gutter.

How it fights

Remain low and still in the channel until prey is within reach.
Target one creature at a time, prioritizing those already prone or isolated.
Use its shove to disrupt formation rather than to pursue nimble targets across open ground.

Who it attacks first

A creature standing in or beside the gutter.
A prone creature within reach.
The nearest living creature making noise.

Works well with

A second Gutter Dead can threaten a creature that has been knocked prone, but avoid overwhelming low-level parties with multiple attackers.
A cramped gutter or flooded passage can make its slow approach more dangerous.

How to beat it

Keep standing and avoid being caught alone in a narrow channel.
Use radiant damage or fire to exploit its Undead Nature.
Block or cross the gutter from a distance, denying it an easy approach.

Ways to avoid a fight

Its trail can be followed to its current location, provided the water has not been disturbed.
A character can attempt to lure it with noise or by stepping through the gutter, potentially drawing it away from a guarded passage.

Ecology

A human corpse crawls on its elbows and knees through the gutter, its gray skin swollen and slick. Dark water streams from its mouth and sleeves, tracing its path. Its jaw hangs open as if trying to drink from the channel beneath it.

Behavior

It crawls in silence until prey steps close, then attacks with sudden, clumsy force. It follows living warmth and the sound of footsteps, but rarely leaves the gutter that guides it.

How it lives

A corpse animated by the dungeon's necromantic residue, it haunts the drainage channels and feeds on living intruders. It leaves the gutter only when forced or when pursuing prey within reach.

Lair

The Gutter Dead is found in the drainage channels of The Split Seam, especially where runoff pools beneath broken stonework.

Lore

Dungeon delvers claim the dark trail is an omen that the gutter itself has begun to crawl. In truth, the water is runoff stirred by a shambling corpse, though the trail may linger after the body is destroyed.

What drives it

It seeks living creatures to batter and drag into the gutter, driven by the remnant hunger of its former life.

After the fight

When destroyed, the corpse collapses into a shallow pool of dark water. The water drains toward the nearest crack, carrying scraps of clothing and any small object hidden in the body's mouth.

Variants

A corpse in rusted mail has AC 12 and 27 hit points, but moves only 15 feet per turn.
A swollen corpse may leave enough water to make a short stretch of gutter slick, as a scene detail rather than a separate mechanical effect.

Hooks

Plot hooks

The dark water trail leads to a missing delver's pack wedged beneath a grate.
The Gutter Dead wears a signet ring identifying a former resident of The Split Seam.
A trail appears in a drained section of the dungeon, suggesting another source of animation nearby.

How to use it

Place it in a gutter that crosses a room, letting its dark trail warn observant characters before it attacks.
Use one Gutter Dead as a low-threat ambusher, or pair it with other weak undead for a modest encounter.
The gutter can provide difficult terrain or concealment as the GM sees fit, but neither is required for the creature's statblock.

Treasure

The corpse may carry ordinary personal effects, such as a cracked token or a tarnished button.
A small object may be lodged in its mouth or clothing, at the GM's discretion.
