Loot Sorters - AI-generated fantasy Monster

Loot Sorters

The construct's original instructions survive only as a few scratched symbols beneath its faceplate. It treats the chalk labels as binding law, although it has no reliable way to tell a sacred keepsake from a stolen trinket.

Constructed Nature. The sorter does not need to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep.
Faded Inventory Marks. The sorter has advantage on ability checks made to identify whether an object bears one of its faded shrine inventory marks.

Actions

Sorting Swipe. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage. If the target is holding a Tiny object, the sorter can instead try to snatch it; the target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or the object lands in the sell pile.
Charm Rattle. The sorter rattles a marked charm within 10 feet. One creature that can hear it must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on its next ability check to distinguish a genuine relic from a fake before the end of its next turn. This is a custom, nonmagical distraction.

Reactions

Keep the Inventory. When a creature within 5 feet picks up an object from a chalk pile, the sorter moves up to 10 feet toward that creature. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.
Role
Minor guardian and nuisance

Any; suitable as a minor obstacle for a level 1 party

Gear

  • Shrine cord (Tool, No monetary value)A bundle of old shrine cord used to tie tagged items together.
  • Sorting tags (Trade goods, 1 gp for the set)A handful of stamped brass tags, some bearing faded devotional marks.

Notes for the game master

This is a custom construct, not an official D&D monster.
The stat block is calibrated as a single CR 1/8 creature.

Tactics

  1. Opening

It clatters a warning rhythm, then rushes toward the nearest creature carrying an object from a chalk circle.

  2. Mid-fight

It uses Sorting Swipe to knock items from hands and Charm Rattle to confuse anyone trying to identify the relics.

  3. End of the fight

If badly damaged, it tries to carry one valuable charm through the eastern archway rather than fight to the death.

  4. Retreat

It has no sense of fear, but retreats with a stolen item if reduced to 2 hit points or fewer.

How it fights

It focuses on creatures who touch the marked piles.
It uses its small frame to dart between shelves and piles.
It does not understand surrender, bargaining, or the value of its own survival.

Who it attacks first

A creature carrying an item from one of the chalk circles
The nearest creature disturbing the do not touch pile

Works well with

A trap or hazard beyond the eastern archway can make the sorter's attempts to shepherd intruders more consequential.
A second weak construct can create a comic but distracting tag-team without substantially raising the threat.

How to beat it

It has only 9 hit points and can be disabled by ordinary attacks.
A creature can avoid provoking it by leaving objects where they are and moving calmly through the room.
The sorter has no ranged attack and is easy to keep at a distance.

Ways to avoid a fight

A character who speaks calmly and places a loose charm in the correct pile can distract it for 1 minute.
A character who succeeds on a DC 10 Intelligence (Investigation) check can infer that it sorts by stamped tags, not by an object's true value.
Replacing a missing chalk label can cause it to stop and recheck nearby objects instead of attacking.

Ecology

A fussy little assembly of two brass hands, a spindle of shrine cord, and a face like a blank tally token. It skitters between the chalk circles, holding stolen charms up to the light before dropping each into a pile.

Behavior

Meticulous and single-minded. It sorts objects according to old shrine rules, treating anyone who disturbs a pile as a thief. It does not pursue creatures who leave the room without taking anything.

How it lives

Loot Sorters are not a natural species. Shrine custodians once made small, durable helpers to inventory offerings. In Sootwatch Tower, the old task has been twisted into the handling of stolen goods.

Lair

Sootwatch Tower's paired shrine spaces, now one cluttered sorting room. Chalk circles divide the floor into piles labeled safe, sell, and do not touch. A thin vibration hums through the eastern archway.

Lore

The construct's original instructions survive only as a few scratched symbols beneath its faceplate. It treats the chalk labels as binding law, although it has no reliable way to tell a sacred keepsake from a stolen trinket.

What drives it

Keep the piles in order and prevent unapproved handling of the sorted objects.

After the fight

When destroyed, the sorter collapses into a heap of brass tags and linen wrappings. The chalk circles remain, though their labels may have been scuffed or rearranged during the fight.

Variants

A Bell-Tagged Sorter, named for an old shrine tale, announces each object's assigned pile with a tiny bell and has the same statistics.
A Little Clerk, an affectionate nickname from a former caretaker, carries a wax tablet instead of brass tags and has the same statistics.

Hooks

Plot hooks

One object in the do not touch pile is still humming in time with the eastern archway.
The stolen charms include a keepsake belonging to an NPC who insists it was never meant to be sold.
The sorter has placed a seemingly worthless brass token in the safe pile, but it bears a mark matching a sealed room elsewhere in the tower.

How to use it

Use one Loot Sorter as a low-threat guardian in the chalk-marked sorting room.
Let the room's labels and scattered valuables create a choice: fight the construct, calm it, or work out what it considers safe.
The eastern archway's vibration can foreshadow a larger danger without requiring the sorter to be stronger.

Treasure

The stamped brass tags and shrine cord are worth about 1 gp together.
The piles may contain stolen charms or minor relics chosen by the DM.
