At the table

Voice

A dry, slightly rasping onset gives way to clear, brisk speech. Her breath catches after a steep climb, and she often begins with a small throat-clear from cold mountain air. The sound is shaped by Swiss German and by years of calling directions outdoors.

Her voice has a dry catch at the start of a sentence, from cold air and long days outdoors. Swiss German vowels shape her English, and she clips route instructions into practical fragments. When excited about a plant, she speaks faster and adds its local name before explaining what it does.

Speech patterns

Names terrain and plants precisely when calm; under pressure, she gives short directions.
Uses questions to test whether someone knows the mountain rather than openly challenging them.
Calls an unfamiliar plant 'interesting' before admitting whether she thinks it is safe.

How to play them

Begin with practical questions about routes, weather, or food. She responds well to patience and demonstrated respect for the mountains. Do not demand that she reveal where Klaus or Marine are hiding; a direct threat makes her evasive or sends her fleeing.

Goal

Find a safe, discreet mountain route that will let the three Wolpertingers travel without exposing their refuge.

Motivation

To belong without surrendering her freedom to explore, and to keep Klaus and Marine from being driven out.

Appearance

Adriene has a human-presenting mien with softly feathered shoulders and forearms, and a fae mien whose legs end in narrow, cloven deer feet. Her feathers lie close and matte, like down pressed by mountain rain; they lift along the nape when she is startled. Her skin is weathered pink at the nose and knuckles from wind, while the rest of her face is pale and freckled. She plants each foot carefully on uneven ground, then moves in quick, springing bounds when she forgets to be cautious. Her unexpected detail: she keeps a tiny, immaculate enamel spoon tucked into her boot for tasting plants.

Clothing

Often-new 2026 Alpine clothing: a clean technical shell, wool base layers, hard-wearing hiking trousers, and fresh trail shoes she removes when her fae feet need room. She wears a small woven neck scarf in a traditional regional pattern, but keeps the rest of her kit modern and practical.

Body language

She keeps her weight forward and her knees loose, as if ready to bound away. When listening, she angles one shoulder toward the speaker and stills so completely that the faint movement of her feathers stands out. She touches the enamel spoon when she is weighing a risk.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Adriene is generous with food and information when she trusts someone, yet stubbornly private about where she sleeps. She is observant and careful on a trail, but impulsive when a new plant catches her attention. In company she uses jokes to soften suspicion; alone after a scare, she becomes methodical and rechecks every choice.

Alignment
Seelie

Quirks

Taps her spoon twice against a tooth before tasting anything.
Greets unfamiliar flowers with a small nod, as though acknowledging a neighbor.
Counts uphill switchbacks in groups of seven, then loses count and starts again.
Turns her scarf inside out when she believes someone is watching.

Habits

Checks the wind and the nearest uphill route before settling anywhere unfamiliar.
Offers plant samples as gifts, but names them only after she has tasted them.
When she feels cornered, she makes herself busy with practical work rather than argue.
After a frightening encounter, she insists on retracing the route alone to learn what she missed.

Background

Adriene grew up in a Swiss valley where her family taught her the names of useful plants and the limits of foraging. Her fae nature first showed plainly during a wet spring ascent: she fled a sudden rockslide on cloven feet, then hid for hours beneath a shepherd's stone shelter, certain the villagers would drive her away. She later found shelter near a freehold lodge, where Joanna, a pooka employed there, concealed her and two other Wolpertinger Gallain, Klaus and Marine. The lodge's residents regard the three as invaders, and their welcome remains conditional. Adriene has made herself useful by scouting nearby paths and bringing back edible herbs, but her taste-first curiosity has already caused trouble. She still explores alone, despite Joanna's warnings, and is trying to find a safe route through the mountains that the lodge can use without exposing the hidden Gallain.

Role in the story

A concealed Gallain whose knowledge can aid mountain travel, while her presence tests how the freehold treats outsiders and who is willing to risk sheltering them.

“The lodge's residents regard the three as invaders, and their welcome remains conditional.”
