Appearance
Kjell is a compact, broad-shouldered dwarf with the dense, weathered look of someone built for carrying crates uphill. He waits with his weight on the balls of his feet, one heel lifted as if the floor might suddenly tilt. His square jaw works constantly, worrying one side of his mouth, and his blunt lower teeth show whenever he laughs, which is usually at the wrong moment. His hands are callused and permanently dusted with blue chalk. He moves with surprising quiet for his size, sliding around corners rather than turning into them. The unexpected thing about him is his gentleness with fragile objects: he handles eggs, glass vials, and frightened animals with the reverence other people reserve for relics.

A soot-gray wool coat reinforced with leather panels, a faded red-and-ochre woven sash, sturdy trousers, soft-soled boots, and a dozen labeled pouches. His sleeves are rolled precisely to the same height.
Body Language
He leans forward as if listening to a distant creak, keeps one thumb hooked beneath his belt, and rocks subtly from heel to toe while waiting. When lying, he becomes unnaturally still.
