Appearance
Halbrid is a weathered Varisian man with a long, narrow face, broad hands, and the compact balance of someone who has spent decades walking where the ground moves. He does not stride through the reeds so much as place each foot after asking the mud a question. His clothes look repeatedly repaired rather than neglected: a brown wool coat has green thread at the elbows, his trousers are wrapped below the knee in waxed strips of old sailcloth, and one carefully polished copper button sits among mismatched bone toggles. He carries himself with quiet economy, never wasting a gesture. The unexpected thing about him is his gentleness around delicate objects. He handles broken pottery, insects, and even a stranger's glass as if each might bruise.
“His voice is low, dry, and deliberate, with Varisian vowels softened by years around Magnimarian merchants. He speaks as though every sentence is a line in a contract, but his jokes arrive so quietly that listeners often miss them.”

Distinguishing Features
A thumb-sized black beetle often rides on his coat collar, and Halbrid refuses to brush it off.
His left boot has a strip of faded blue embroidery sewn into the tongue, an oddly elegant detail among otherwise practical clothing.
He smells faintly of wet charcoal, bitter herbs, and copper coins.
He whistles three descending notes before entering any room, even when he knows it is empty.
He has an unusually delicate touch for a man with scarred, work-hardened hands.
Voice
“A low, rasping baritone with a gentle Varisian lilt. He sounds most dangerous when he becomes polite.”
Clothing
A peat-brown wool coat, patched trousers, waxed sailcloth leg wraps, soft marsh boots, a red-and-ochre neck scarf, fingerless gloves, and a carefully polished copper clasp shaped like a kiln door.
Body Language
Halbrid keeps his shoulders slightly forward, as though walking into rain. His eyes rarely settle on faces. They track hands, waterlines, reed movement, exits, and the places where a boot might sink. When he trusts someone, he turns his whole body toward them and stops touching his billhook.
