At the table

Voice

A newly lowered, slightly rough voice with a dry catch at the end of long sentences, as if his throat has not quite adapted to its new register. Its texture suggests smoke-dried air, ink-stained work, and too little sleep. The sound is most uncertain when he says his own name, then steadies as he continues.

Edda speaks in careful, measured phrases shaped by laboratory work and historical study. He tends to qualify claims, distinguish memory from evidence, and correct himself aloud. When comfortable, his humor is dry and unexpectedly playful. When upset, his words come quicker and more bluntly rather than softer.

Speech patterns

Often begins with a factual observation, then admits the feeling underneath it after a pause.
Uses precise, history-minded comparisons: 'That is how the old notes describe a kiln when the draft goes wrong.'
Asks clarifying questions when he fears he has misunderstood a boundary.
When embarrassed, overexplains the sequence of events instead of saying simply that he is embarrassed.

How to play them

Approach Edda with practical questions and room to answer in his own time. Respect his stated identity and let him decide what to share about his former life. Be direct about boundaries; he responds well to clear expectations. If he withdraws, offer a concrete task or quiet company rather than pressing for a confession.

Goal

Learn what the Firedrake bloodline is doing to him, stay accountable for his choices, and help the Seven build a life that is more than temporary survival.

Motivation

To remain a thoughtful, trustworthy person while his body and circumstances change faster than he can understand.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A young man who looks as if he has outgrown his own outline in a hurry: taller than he expects, broadening through the shoulders, and still carrying the careful, slightly tucked-in posture of someone used to taking up less space. His skin is warm to the touch, especially at the throat and wrists. Dark hair grows in uneven stages along his jaw and arms, while his scalp hair is kept severely cropped to avoid dealing with it. His clothes are mended neatly but fit poorly at the shoulders and sleeves. The one conspicuously cared-for item is a small, old-fashioned shaving mirror, polished until it catches the light. He moves with a new, unpracticed physical confidence that sometimes surprises him into stopping mid-step.

Clothing

A plain work shirt and patched wool trousers, both recently let out at the seams. His sleeves are often rolled unevenly. He keeps a folded cloth for cleaning ink from his fingers and a little shaving mirror wrapped separately to protect it.

Body language

Edda keeps his elbows close when anxious and checks the set of his shoulders as if he is trying to learn where his body ends. When comfortable, he leans over a page or workbench with absorbed focus. His hands hover before reaching for anything unfamiliar, and he sometimes pauses to feel the heat in his own palms. Around Edith he becomes unusually attentive to where he stands, then catches himself and gives her room.

Distinguishing features

A persistent warmth at his wrists and throat, like a banked stove beneath the skin.
Uneven new beard growth, with careful, tentative shaving lines.
His shirt and coat have been painstakingly let out at the shoulders, leaving mismatched repairs plainly visible.
A polished shaving mirror is treated with more care than any other possession.

Personality

16 traits and drives

Gentle and considerate, but so watchful of his own conduct that he can seem remote. He enjoys careful scholarship and ordinary company, yet distrusts easy certainty. In calm moments he is quietly curious and wry; under stress he turns inward and dissects his feelings. When someone is threatened, his restraint can give way to a quick, fierce protectiveness that surprises him.

Quirks

Turns cups by their handles until they point exactly away from the nearest person.
Sniffs the air near a stove or forge before checking whether it is actually lit.
Counts door hinges when waiting through an awkward silence.
Keeps a tiny list of unfamiliar bodily sensations, phrased as if they were laboratory observations.
When reading an old text, taps the page twice before turning it, as though asking permission.

Habits

Studies old objects closely, then asks who made them and what ordinary problem they were meant to solve.
When his temper rises, he tries to name the feeling before it can steer his conduct.
Makes a point of asking before entering a private space or touching another person's belongings.
After a difficult conversation, he often returns with a practical offer of help rather than an apology alone.

When self-conscious, becomes guarded and distant, leaving others to guess what he needs.
His temper can flare faster than he expects, especially when he is overheated or hungry.
He sometimes treats a feeling as a problem to solve rather than an experience to share.

That the Firedrake inheritance will turn anger or appetite into something he cannot rein in.
That people will treat his memories and former marriage as false because his body has changed.
That his attempts to be considerate will be mistaken for coldness or rejection.
That his feelings for Edith will damage their trust.

Combat

AC 10 · HP 5 · 30 ft.

Avoids a fight if there is any safe alternative. If cornered, he puts furniture or a door between himself and danger, uses whatever laboratory object is at hand to distract an attacker, and tries to get allies clear. His Firedrake heat is not a reliable weapon.

Background

Before the upheaval, Edda was one of three women in a small circle of displaced survivors, a laboratory assistant who found comfort in cataloguing old tools, marginal notes, and the ordinary habits of dead people. Then his body began changing in uncomfortable waves. He emerged as a young man of eighteen, understanding himself as a man even as his sudden height, strength, heat, appetite, temper, and new hair made him feel like a stranger to himself. His bloodline is tied to a custom Firedrake lineage, descended from a greedy, ever-burning pitch-black dragon. On the first night, drunk and unaware that his body had changed, he went into a room with Edith and Klara. Waking to the realization frightened him, and the memory remains tangled with embarrassment and the need to be clear about boundaries. At the hot spring he was awkward about undressing, but the warmth eased his aching body. He has begun learning to shave from Marek. In his former life he had a husband; that bond remains precious, though memory and present circumstance do not fit together easily. Edda is also developing a crush on Edith, which he examines so relentlessly that he rarely knows what to do with it. He belongs to the Seven at the Shuttered Hearth, a displaced survival circle trying to make a home out of mutual need.

Role in the story

A vulnerable but capable witness to an uncanny transformation, and a thoughtful member of the group's found family. Edda can connect present dangers to the forgotten history behind them while his own changing bloodline raises questions about the cost of inherited power.
