Numbi of the Hush
Ash Listener
Numbi of the Hush
Species
Human
Appearance
Numbi is a compact, broad-shouldered woman whose skin has the dry, fine texture of paper left beside a kiln. Ash has settled permanently into the creases of her knuckles and around her fingernails, no matter how often she washes. She moves with careful economy, never quite seeming to disturb the air around her, yet her heavy work boots land with startling certainty. Her face is gentle and round, framed by a mass of silver-black hair braided into dozens of tiny cords, each tied with a different colored thread for a mourner she has served. The unexpected contradiction is her hands: they are rough, cracked, and strong enough to split kindling, but she handles every ash vial as if it were a sleeping bird.
“Quiet, deliberate, and intimate. Numbi speaks as though every listener deserves the full weight of each word.”

Distinguishing Features
Dozens of silver-black braids, each tied with colored thread representing a mourner or household.
Ash permanently gathered in the lines of her hands and beneath her nails.
A spotless ivory cord wound around her left wrist.
A habit of looking at people as though committing the exact rhythm of their breathing to memory.
Ceramic beads sewn into the hem of her mourning shawl, each one stamped with a single name.
Voice
“A low contralto softened by years of speaking in cremation halls. Her voice carries surprisingly well without becoming loud, like a bell heard through heavy snowfall.”
Clothing
She wears layered charcoal-gray robes beneath a faded rust-red work apron, patched at the knees and carefully darned at the cuffs. A deep blue mourning shawl hangs from one shoulder, its hem weighted with tiny ceramic beads. Her boots are cracked from kiln heat but polished before every funeral. Her most over-cared-for item is a spotless ivory cord wrapped three times around her left wrist, the only surviving possession of the child she once rescued.
Body Language
Numbi keeps her elbows close to her ribs and often rests one palm over the small ash ledger at her waist. She tilts her head when listening, as if catching a distant voice. When someone threatens a mourner, her posture becomes unnervingly still, her shoulders square, and her thumb slides beneath the leather wrap of her crook.
