Iskessa
Iskessa
At the table
Voice
A clear, carrying voice trained to reach the back of a ceremonial hall without shouting. Its texture has a dry edge from clove smoke and hot lamps; her consonants land neatly, and she gives important words a fraction more space than the rest.
Her speech is shaped by court lessons and years of performing over room noise: carefully articulated, paced to carry across a hall, with crisp consonants and a faint dry rasp from smoke and heated costume lamps. She uses precise formal phrasing before an audience, but her private speech is brisk and practical. Anger makes her sentences shorter and more exact, not softer.

How to play them
Treat Iskessa as a person with plans, not as a prize to be rescued. She responds to directness, discretion, and practical offers that do not endanger the servants. Prove you can keep a confidence before asking for her larger plan. She may accept help, but will negotiate who else receives protection and what happens afterward.
Goal
Prevent her sale, free the household servants who choose to leave, and find a safe route to reunite with Namar.
Motivation
To reclaim choice without making other people pay for her freedom.
Appearance
A tall, statuesque dragonoid woman who holds a room with the easy balance of a dancer and the stillness of a court portrait. Her bronze scales have blue undertones, with warm umber showing in their fine seams; pale silver scales cover her throat and abdomen. Tiny, precise markings cross her cheeks like strokes of a calligrapher's brush. Pale sapphire eyes, flecked with molten gold and slit-pupiled, travel first to doors, guards, and hands, then settle on a speaker. A translucent silk veil rests over her snout, leaving delicate silver piercings visible. Her smile is warm, but never submissive. She smells distinctly of clove smoke and the bitter citrus oil used to polish her chains; she knows it, and uses the scent to recognize which rooms have been prepared for her.
Clothing
Layered black and pearl silk ceremonial attire leaves portions of her scaled torso visible and allows sharp turns without snagging. Silver bracelets, necklaces, hip chains, anklets, engraved toe rings, and a filigreed thighlet carry ornamentation that doubles as a coded record of favors and warnings. One bracelet conceals a small relic. A heavy iron tether secures one clawed ankle, its chain coiling across the polished floor; the other ankle bears toe rings linked to a delicate anklet.
Body language
Her movements are precise and economical; even standing still, she keeps her weight balanced as if music might begin at any moment. In company she angles her shoulders to keep both the speaker and the nearest exit in view. She touches one silver bracelet when considering a lie, and lifts her chin when someone mistakes restraint for surrender.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesIskessa can be gracious enough to put a frightened stranger at ease, yet stubbornly refuses to flatter anyone who expects gratitude for basic decency. She is patient with servants and children, calculating with powerful people, and unexpectedly funny when she feels safe. Under pressure, her courtly composure becomes sharper rather than colder; when alone, she allows herself anger and grief but rarely lets either choose her next move.
- Alignment
- Principled but pragmatic; she keeps her word when she can, and refuses to mistake obedience for virtue.

Iskessa uses distance, furniture, and the tether's limited reach to keep pursuers separated, then targets hands, knees, and balance. She uses Cinder Breath to create a chance to flee or protect an ally, not to pursue a kill. If an ally is in danger, she will take a risk she would never accept for herself.

Background
Iskessa was born to a minor dragon-blooded house that guarded a mountain pass and treated public dance as a form of treaty-making: every turn, pause, and offered hand carried meaning. At fifteen, she performed before two rival valley lords and noticed one had concealed an assassin in the musicians' gallery. She broke the choreography to warn them. The assassination failed, but her family was blamed for embarrassing both courts, and its holdings were seized. Sold into the household of a wealthy patron, she became a ceremonial dancer, displayed as proof that the patron's enemies had been humbled. Her change came during a winter performance when a kitchen girl named Hessa slipped her a key and asked her to remember the servants' names. Iskessa learned that escape without witnesses would leave everyone else behind. Now she quietly maps the household's routines, trades protection with the overworked steward Oru, and sends coded messages to her younger brother Namar, who is hiding among traveling players. Her current problem is that her patron plans to sell her to a foreign court before the spring thaw, while the chain at her ankle is also a public warning to the servants who helped her.
Role in the story
A politically astute captive with a plan of her own. She can become an ally, informant, or catalyst for a rescue and labor uprising, but does not exist merely to be freed by the party.
“At fifteen, she performed before two rival valley lords and noticed one had concealed an assassin in the musicians' gallery.”
- Faction
- Held in Lord Veyun's household; secretly aided by a small circle of household servants. Her family's old pass-wardens no longer operate as a formal faction.
