Elläris, Lord of Order
Elläris, Lord of Order
At the table
“That is not the question I should have answered.”
Voice
A dry, steady voice shaped by years of giving instructions over rain, wagon noise, and arguments in stone rooms. His consonants are sharply formed, and he draws a brief breath through his nose before responding to accusations. He sounds most human when he forgets to speak formally and starts explaining how something is repaired.
His speech has the clipped precision of a court officer and the practical vocabulary of a man who has spent years inspecting gates, roads, and storehouses. He pauses for one measured breath before answering a difficult question. He avoids grand declarations, preferring specific promises he can keep.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Elläris listens to all sides before making a judgment, but he does not confuse patience with indecision. He offers a concrete remedy where possible and asks for proof when claims are serious. He responds well to honest admissions of fault and poorly to appeals based only on rank. Characters who bring evidence, protect civilians, or propose a workable safeguard can earn his cooperation.
Goal
Stop the border garrison from invoking an obsolete emergency decree to confiscate the winter stores of a poor village, while establishing a lawful process that will prevent the same abuse next year.
Motivation
To make authority answerable to the people it governs, and to prove through action that his title can protect rather than merely command.
Appearance
Elläris has the still, squared posture of a courthouse statue, but moves with the careful economy of someone accustomed to crowded corridors and armed arguments. His skin is weather-browned and finely lined around the mouth. His dark hair is combed flat beneath a plain steel cap, except for one stubborn curl that escapes above his right ear. His armor is polished at the edges and dulled across the chest by years of rain. He wears his ceremonial mantle badly: one shoulder always slips, and he keeps hitching it back into place. Unexpectedly for a stern lord, he carries a small wooden puzzle bird in his breast pocket and turns its loose wing whenever he is thinking. People remember his deliberate pause before he answers, as if he is weighing each word against an invisible rulebook.
Clothing
Practical chain mail beneath a dark blue surcoat, a rain-stained wool mantle with one shoulder that will not sit properly, and a plain iron signet ring. His ceremonial clothes are neatly mended but visibly old.
Body language
He stands with feet planted evenly and hands folded over his belt, a posture that reads as calm until someone notices how tightly his thumbs press together. When listening, he angles his head toward the speaker and keeps his gaze fixed on their hands. His right hand repeatedly finds the puzzle bird in his pocket when he is tempted to interrupt.

Personality
12 traits and drivesElläris is orderly without being cold: he wants every claim examined, yet notices the frightened person everyone else is ignoring. He can be patient and almost self-effacing in private, but in a public hearing his need for precision makes him formidable. When angry, he becomes more direct and names the consequence he intends to prevent; he does not soften his voice or hide behind ceremony. He values mercy, but struggles to accept that mercy sometimes requires an imperfect choice made quickly.
- Alignment
- Lawful good, though he has learned that a lawful decision can still be cruel.

Combat
AC 18 · HP 44 · 30 ft.Elläris holds a narrow approach with shield and longsword, using Extra Attack to pressure a dangerous foe while keeping himself between enemies and vulnerable allies. He uses Divine Smite to finish a threat quickly rather than spending slots on showy damage, and reserves healing for an ally who would otherwise fall. He casts Bless before a fight when he has warning, and Command to disrupt an enemy who is about to harm a bystander. He retreats only when staying would expose civilians to greater danger.

Background
Elläris was raised in a river town where law meant whoever could keep the floodgates staffed through winter. As a young watch officer, he believed that a clear rule applied evenly was the fairest answer. During the famine year, he enforced a grain seizure order against a neighborhood accused of hiding supplies. The order was lawful, the accusation was false, and the seizure left several families hungry. A clerk named Branka secretly showed him the original tally, altered by a wealthy miller. Elläris exposed the fraud, surrendered his commission, and spent the next decade rebuilding trust as a sworn knight rather than a magistrate. He is now Lord of Order in the March of Vesk, responsible for settling disputes between villages, nobles, and a stubborn border garrison. Branka remains his closest adviser, though she refuses to let him forget his complicity. His former commander, Dargan, still considers him a traitor. Elläris is currently trying to prevent the garrison from using an old emergency decree to seize a village's winter stores.
Role in the story
A principled but compromised authority figure who can become an ally, obstacle, or moral counterweight. Elläris offers the party a way to investigate a looming seizure of village supplies and must decide whether to expose his own past role in a similar injustice.
