Appearance
Tess looks like someone built for carrying difficult things uphill. Her movements are economical and quietly deliberate, with no wasted flourish, yet she turns with startling speed when someone behind her needs help. Her hands are broad, heavily callused, and permanently darkened at the fingertips by charcoal, lampblack, and old iron dust from years of repairing tools and marking beams. A small copper thimble hangs from a cord around her wrist, absurdly delicate beside her scarred knuckles. She leaves people with the impression of a warm hearth protected by a locked door.
“Low, steady, and practical, with a highland cadence that becomes almost formal when she is frightened. She speaks softly enough that people lean closer, then makes her most important statements without raising her volume.”

Distinguishing Features
Her charcoal-blackened fingertips contrast sharply with the immaculate white cloth she uses to polish her shield.
A copper thimble is tied around her wrist and clicked against her shield rim whenever she is thinking.
She has a small notch cut into the edge of her shield for every person she has carried out of danger.
Her coat smells faintly of wool smoke, rainwater, and crushed juniper.
She smiles with complete sincerity at terrible moments, not from amusement but to reassure everyone watching her.
Voice
“A low contralto with a rough edge, like a wooden door opening after rain. Her laugh is unexpectedly bright and youthful.”
Clothing
A riveted chain shirt under a faded green wool coat, sturdy charcoal trousers, thick mud-stained boots, and a red woven sash used to bind splints or haul bundles. Her shield is wrapped at the rim in blue cloth so frightened children can recognize her at a distance.
Body Language
Tess stands squarely but never rigidly. Her shield arm hangs relaxed until danger appears. She repeatedly rubs the copper thimble on her wrist with her thumb, usually without noticing, and angles her body between vulnerable people and open space.
