Valka Mikeladze
Species
Catkin
Appearance
Valka is a broad-hipped catkin woman with a heavy, unmistakably pregnant belly and the careful balance of someone carrying more than one life. Her tawny coat is short along her arms and cheeks but thickens into a dark, plush ruff beneath her jaw. She moves with a wetnurse's practiced economy, never wasting a step, yet her tail gives away every emotion by making small, deliberate hooks in the air. Her breathing is normally deep and quiet, with a soft purr hidden beneath it. When angry, the purr stops completely and her breath becomes measured through her nose. When frightened, she inhales in three quick clicks before forcing herself calm. The contradictory impression she leaves is of a woman who looks built to weather a siege but handles infants with almost absurd delicacy. Within a minute of meeting her, most people notice the old copper nursing cup hanging from her belt. Its rim is polished bright by years of anxious thumb-rubbing, while the handle is green with age.
“Her speech is low, plain, and deliberate, carrying a faint eastern valley cadence. She clips unnecessary words when working and stretches vowels when soothing someone.”

Distinguishing Features
A copper nursing cup hangs at her belt, bright only along the rim where her thumb has polished it through years of anxious rubbing.
Her purr is audible as a low vibration in calm conversation but vanishes entirely when she is furious.
Her tail makes precise little hooks in the air, almost like written punctuation.
She wears a narrow red thread around her wrist, tied there by a child she saved during the Red Cough.
Her whiskers twitch whenever someone lies, even when she is trying not to show that she noticed.
Voice
“A low contralto with a soft purr underneath it. When rattled, the purr cuts out and her breathing becomes audibly measured, with three quick clicks before each controlled sentence.”
Clothing
A smoke-blue wool dress split for movement, a cream linen apron, layered belly wraps, thick red stockings, and a weathered brown cloak fastened with a bone toggle. Her sleeves are rolled to the elbows and marked with faint soap stains that never quite wash out.
Body Language
Valka keeps one palm beneath her belly when standing and rests the other on the copper nursing cup. She angles her body between strangers and children, even during ordinary conversation. Her ears flatten only when she is genuinely afraid. In anger, she becomes perfectly still except for the slow tightening of her fingers around the cudgel.
