Branka has a square, weathered face and the air of someone who has spent decades noticing what everyone else overlooks. Her movements are smooth and economical, but when she waits she balances on the balls of her feet as if a floorboard might ask her a question. A tiny brass pinecone on a cord hangs at her throat, its lower point polished nearly flat from years of being rubbed with her thumb. She smells faintly of cedar shavings, pepper, and rain-damp wool. Her smile is warm enough to invite a customer in, while her stillness makes the room feel carefully measured.
