At the table

Voice

A dry, close-miked rasp with a little grit of cave dust in it. His consonants are clean and deliberate, and the ends of sentences settle rather than rise. When angered, he does not soften or hush: he becomes quicker and more exact, as if issuing instructions during a cave-in.

He speaks in measured clauses shaped by years of giving instructions in echoing tunnels. He places crisp emphasis on quantities, routes, and consequences, and often pauses to hear how a room returns his words. His vocabulary is practical, but grief makes him unexpectedly precise when discussing family keepsakes.

Speech patterns

He frames proposals as practical questions: "Who carries the stone when it falls?"
He gives important information in small, testable pieces rather than making grand promises.
He uses mining and cave imagery, especially when warning that a small crack can become a collapse.
He names the price of a favor before describing the favor itself.

How to play them

He begins with careful questions and offers a modest, verifiable piece of information to test a visitor's judgment. He will discuss the Obsidian Supply's proposal only with people who can show they understand the danger of the Shadow Crossing. If pressed for its location, he demands a credible plan to protect the cave settlement and will not accept payment alone.

Goal

Keep the Shadow Crossing contained and secure a future for the Ironspire Shadar-kai without allowing either Silverhold or the Obsidian Supply to dictate their fate.

Motivation

He wants to preserve his people's independence and prevent an uncontrolled breach, but he also wants proof that his sister's death bought them something more than another generation of fear.

Appearance

Mizushi has the still, watchful bearing of someone who learned to read a cave by its silences. His ash-gray skin is matte and finely ridged at the temples, weathered by mineral dust into pale, chalky seams around his knuckles and jaw. His long black hair is tied low with a strip of frayed blue cloth, and loose strands cling to his face in the damp air. He moves with a deliberate economy, turning his whole body rather than only his head, as if every angle might matter. A tiny brass wind-up bird, absurdly bright beside his severe clothes, is clipped to his belt; he winds it when thinking. His presence feels less like a threat than a doorway being quietly closed.

Clothing

Layered charcoal wraps beneath a sleeveless, scale-stitched vest of treated cavehide. His boots are soft-soled and dusted white with mineral powder. A faded blue tie holds his hair, and a small brass wind-up bird hangs from his belt beside a plain dagger.

Body language

He keeps his shoulders square and his hands visible during negotiations. His thumb repeatedly tests the little brass bird at his belt. When someone mentions the Shadow Crossing, his jaw tightens and he turns slightly toward the nearest exit.

Distinguishing features

Pale mineral dust settles into the fine ridges of his knuckles and temples, making his skin look faintly veined with chalk.
He repeatedly checks and winds a tiny brass bird at his belt, an unexpectedly cheerful keepsake for a severe cave leader.
He turns his whole body toward a speaker instead of glancing sideways.

Personality

12 traits and drives

He is protective but not gentle: he will quietly mend a stranger's torn pack, then coldly refuse to risk his people for that stranger's cause. In council he is patient and exacting; alone, grief makes him sentimental about small useless things. He dislikes cruelty, yet can become ruthlessly calculating when a threat reaches his settlement.

Alignment
Neutral, with a strong preference for practical bargains over abstract loyalties.

Quirks

He winds the brass bird exactly three turns whenever a conversation reaches a decision.
He taps stone twice before stepping into an unfamiliar passage, listening for the difference in the echo.
He sorts loose pebbles by texture while waiting, then leaves them in a neat line.
He refuses to drink from a cup until he has rotated it once to find the seam.

Habits

Before agreeing to anything, he asks who will bear the cost if the plan fails.
He checks the wind-up bird's key when weighing a difficult choice, though the toy has no useful mechanism.
He is patient with frightened people and curt with those who mistake confidence for competence.
When alone, he walks the settlement's water channels in the same order every night.

Traits · 3

He offers practical care without warmth, then remembers every kindness shown to him.
He distrusts grand promises but is capable of a sudden, costly act of mercy.
He values silence as a tool, yet becomes talkative when explaining cave water systems.

Flaws · 3

He treats secrecy as a form of protection even when it prevents people from making informed choices.
He can reduce human lives to acceptable losses when under pressure.
His suspicion makes him slow to recognize sincere offers of help.

Fears · 3

That the Shadow Crossing will be opened carelessly and something will follow through.
That his people will remember him as the leader who sold their safety for a temporary advantage.
That Namiq will repeat the same fatal courage that killed her mother.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs Silverhold's mining to stop short of the dangerous lower galleries.
Wants the Obsidian Supply to offer guarantees that do not depend on his revealing the gateway.
Needs Namiq to understand the danger without inheriting his fear of every risk.

Combat

AC 13 · HP 21 · 30 ft.

He avoids a fair fight. Mizushi opens with suggestion or a subtle spell to fracture enemy coordination, uses darkness and distance to keep danger away, and spends Shadow Jaunt to escape a surrounded position or cross a lethal gap. He uses Twinned Spell for two vulnerable targets when control matters and reserves his last spell slot for defense or a decisive bargain. He retreats if the cave settlement is threatened.

Spells

Minor Illusion (cantrip, illusion). A faint sound or image appears within range for up to 1 minute. Mizushi uses it to create distant footsteps, a drifting lantern glow, or a brief false silhouette.
Mage Hand (cantrip, conjuration). A spectral hand manipulates objects at a distance. He commonly uses it to test loose stones or retrieve a dropped tool.
Prestidigitation (cantrip, transmutation). He creates a small magical effect, such as marking a stone, chilling a cup, or producing a brief sound.
Shield (level 1, abjuration). A protective ward grants +5 AC, including against the triggering attack, until the start of his next turn. This can be used through his Shield reaction.
Charm Person (level 1, enchantment). Mizushi clouds the mind of a creature he can see within range. On a failed Wisdom save, it is charmed and regards him as a friendly acquaintance for up to 8 hours or until harmed. The target knows it was charmed when the spell ends.
Suggestion (level 2, enchantment). He speaks a short suggestion to a creature that can hear and understand him. On a failed Wisdom save, it follows the suggestion for up to 8 hours, provided it does not appear directly harmful. Concentration required.
Darkness (level 2, evocation). He creates a 20-foot-radius sphere of magical darkness that spreads around corners. Darkvision cannot see through it. Concentration, up to 10 minutes.

Background

Mizushi was born in the cave settlement beneath Ironspire, where Shadar-kai families prize memory, restraint, and the ability to endure the mountain's long dark. As a young scout, he helped guide miners through a newly opened shaft. A tremor sealed the route behind them; his sister Sefra died holding a failing brace while the others escaped. Mizushi survived by bargaining with a Shadow Crossing presence he still refuses to name. The experience changed his view of courage: he now believes a leader's first duty is to choose which danger the community can afford. He rose to lead the cave-dwellers by keeping their water channels clear and settling disputes before they became blood feuds. Now the Obsidian Supply has approached him with a proposal: reveal the gateway's location and help undermine Silverhold's dragonborn mining operation in exchange for a cut of the ore. He distrusts the Supply, but fears Silverhold's expanding tunnels will awaken what lies beyond the Crossing. His sister's daughter, Namiq, openly argues that he has mistaken caution for wisdom.

Role in the story

A wary power broker whose offer to reveal the Shadow Crossing could help the Obsidian Supply harm Silverhold, but also expose the region to a threat that has been contained for generations. The party can challenge his bargain, earn his trust, or force him to choose between secrecy and survival.

“As a young scout, he helped guide miners through a newly opened shaft.”
