Malakor Earth-Eater
Malakor Earth-Eater
At the table
Voice
A chest-deep, gravelly rumble, textured by faint hissing grit and the occasional crackle of cooling stone. His pace is slow and deliberate, but the consonants land with surprising precision.
His voice grinds from deep in his chest, a dry rumble threaded with the hiss of shifting grit. Words arrive slowly and distinctly, with the weight of a stone set down on a table. When he is agitated, the sound gains a rough crackle like cooling rock, while ash spills from his skin.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Malakor as a stern but reachable negotiator. He responds to measured claims, physical evidence, and clear plans for those who bear the risk. Threats make him immovable; respectful disagreement and willingness to accept responsibility make him listen. If confronted with the truth about the founding of the Tectonic Cults, he will challenge the party to say who should hear it and what they intend to do next.
Goal
Keep the Tectonic Cults from turning the Ring into a weapon or a spectacle, while preventing the Houses from using the failing anchors as an excuse to cast the lowlands adrift.
Motivation
He believes power is justified only when its bearer accepts responsibility for the ground it shifts and the people standing on it.
Appearance
Malakor towers over most folk, his broad stone torso rising above a lower body that slumps and reforms as glowing volcanic slag. His surface is dark basalt, rough as cooled clinker, with thin seams of dull orange heat that brighten when his weight shifts. He moves with an unsettling economy, pausing so completely that dust settles on his shoulders, then gliding forward as the stone beneath him yields. Fine black ash sifts from his skin when a difficult subject reaches him. Unexpectedly, he keeps a small, carefully folded paper bird tucked in his collar, made by a child from a lowland settlement.
Clothing
A sleeveless mantle of layered, heat-darkened stonecloth fastened with a plain copper clasp. He wears a belt of carved measuring pegs and a collar pouch holding the folded paper bird.
Body language
He stands with his shoulders square and his head slightly inclined, as if weighing the room through its foundations. His lower body flows around obstacles instead of stepping over them. When troubled, ash sifts from his elbows and the seams in his torso glow brighter.

Combat
AC 18 · HP 161 · 30 ft., burrow 20 ft.Malakor controls space rather than chasing opponents. He uses Planar Pull to drag threats into reach, Erupt Earth to scatter groups and break stable footing, then attacks the most dangerous nearby foe. He avoids lethal force when a target can still be disarmed or driven off. If the party presents compelling evidence about the count or the cult's history, he may halt combat long enough to demand that they explain who will bear the consequences.

Background
Malakor is a dao who became presiding elder among factions of the Tectonic Cults, earning authority by understanding how stone bears pressure rather than by promising it will never break. During a formative collapse in the cult's history, he chose to contain a dangerous failure instead of allowing an uncontrolled opening. The decision saved lives, but the strain began the slow transformation of his lower body into slag. He has since spent decades mediating between the Measurers, who would listen and record, and the Unsealers, who would open the Ring. He keeps contact with a lowland paper-maker whose child sends him folded birds, and he remains in bitter correspondence with a former acolyte who believes caution has become complicity. Now the failing anchors and the contested public count have made his old compromises harder to defend. He wants the parties gathering evidence to understand what a true count can cost, without letting the Houses use that truth as permission to abandon the lowlands.
Role in the story
A high-tier elemental power and political hinge in the Tectonic Cults' conflict. Malakor can become a formidable opponent, a guarded source of evidence, or a reluctant ally as the party investigates failing anchors and contests the fate of the lowlands.
