Appearance

Samir is a compact, carefully maintained old man whose posture remains straight even when his knees ache. His skin is weathered bronze, dry at the knuckles and darkened across the back of his neck by decades beneath caravan sun. He moves with a merchant's measured economy, never reaching when a hooked cane, sleeve, or servant can do the work instead. He smells strongly of cardamom, lamp oil, cedar dust, and the faint metallic tang of old coins, a scent he is entirely unaware of. His hands are surprisingly delicate, with ink-darkened cuticles and calluses only along the thumb and forefinger. The unexpected contradiction is his smile, broad and boyish, which appears whenever something breaks, especially if he is the one who built it.

Height5 feet 4 inches
BuildShort and narrow-shouldered, with wiry strength hidden beneath age and layered clothing.
EyesDark hazel, brightened by amber flecks when he becomes curious
HairThin silver hair combed into precise ridges, with a stubborn black lock above his right temple
SkinWeathered bronze with sun-darkened forearms, pale lines at the wrists from years of covered travel, and fine creases around the mouth from smiling at bad bargains

Warm, rapid, and precise, with clipped consonants that make every price sound final. He lowers his voice when discussing secrets and raises it theatrically when presenting an offer.”

Distinguishing Features

A persistent fragrance of cardamom, cedar dust, lamp oil, and old metal clings to him.

His copper-capped cane contains a miniature rotating gear that turns whenever he lies.

He carries a ledger with pages made from mismatched materials, including silk, vellum, bark paper, and thin hammered tin.

His left sleeve is always pinned shut, not because of an injury but because he keeps a tiny wind-up listening device inside it.

He laughs warmly at mechanical failures and grows visibly distressed when a book is creased.

Voice

A mellow baritone with a dry rasp at the edges, like tea poured over gravel. His laughter arrives suddenly and sounds younger than the rest of him.

Clothing

A deep saffron waistcoat beneath a smoke-gray merchant's coat, both repaired with nearly invisible stitching. He wears wide linen trousers, polished ankle boots, a leather belt crowded with keys, and a small brass abacus clipped to his sash. His cane is blackwood capped with a tarnished copper gear.

Body Language

He taps the ferrule of his cane three times before making an offer, angles his head toward the nearest clockwork sound, and touches his ledger whenever a conversation approaches a subject he does not wish to answer. When angry, he becomes perfectly still except for one thumb rubbing a coin's worn edge.
