Beryl Iron-Tap
Species
Rock Gnome
Appearance
Beryl is a compact rock gnome built like a brass-bound toolbox, with broad shoulders, dense hands, and a low center of gravity that makes her seem impossible to knock over. Her close-cropped iron-gray hair stands in stiff little ridges, as if electrified by old machinery. A polished brass auditory lens covers her left eye, its nested rings faintly rotating whenever someone speaks, walks, lies, or shifts their weight. Her fingers are permanently stained with black, violet, and copper ink, while her knuckles bear pale scars from years of repairing devices in cramped shafts. She moves in short, economical bursts, never taking a step without seeming to measure it. The contradictory impression she leaves is that of a fussy clerk who could, at any moment, dismantle a locked door with her bare hands.
“Precise, low, and brisk, with the dry click of a metronome. Beryl pauses before important nouns, as if checking their structural integrity.”

Distinguishing Features
Polished brass auditory lens strapped over her left eye, with rotating concentric rings.
Permanent multi-colored ink stains on her fingers and cuticles.
A small notch cut into the upper rim of her right ear from the Sable Stair Collapse.
Rubber-tipped tapping rod carried like a duelist's baton.
A faint ticking sound from a hidden springwork brace around her left wrist.
Voice
“A dry contralto with a faint metallic resonance, as though every word is spoken through a carefully tuned instrument.”
Clothing
A tailored expeditionary clerk's vest of dark green canvas and oil-treated leather, packed with cipher-pads, calibration tools, folded maps, chalk cartridges, spare lens screws, and labeled vials. A narrow copper chain holds a rubber-tipped tapping rod at her belt. Her boots have soft soles for silent movement across metal grates.
Body Language
Beryl keeps her elbows close, her chin slightly lowered, and her auditory lens angled toward whoever speaks. Her right hand is almost always tapping, counting, or aligning objects. When she trusts someone, she turns her whole body toward them. When she suspects betrayal, only the brass lens moves.
