Appearance
Mireille is an utterly unassuming human woman with mousy brown hair cut into a plain, functional bob and hazel eyes that seem to lose focus whenever attention turns toward her. She keeps her shoulders rounded and her chin lowered, moving with the careful, frictionless gait of someone accustomed to passing between desks without disturbing a single sheet of paper. Her hands are the most striking part of her, narrow and remarkably nimble, with ink permanently settled into the creases around her nails. She has a faint scar across her upper lip, usually mistaken for a wrinkle, and a habit of standing so still that people sometimes begin speaking in front of her as though she were furniture. The contradiction is in her face: when startled, her expression becomes startlingly open and almost childlike, making the cold precision of her later decisions seem impossible.
“Her voice is quiet, dry, and carefully paced, with the measured cadence of someone reading a sentence aloud before deciding whether it is safe to finish. She rarely raises her volume.”

Distinguishing Features
Ink stains permanently darken the skin around her fingernails.
A fine scar crosses her upper lip.
Her left sleeve contains a hidden row of stitched parchment pockets.
She has an unsettling ability to recognize people by the sound of their footsteps.
Her plain iron ring bears a nearly worn-away symbol visible only when held near flame.
Voice
“A low, papery contralto that seems to come from slightly behind the listener. Her words are never rushed, and her silences feel deliberately filed into place.”
Clothing
Drab dust-colored wool robes with patched hems, soft leather shoes, a high collar, and several concealed inner pockets. Her only ornament is a plain iron ring worn on a cord beneath her shirt.
Body Language
Mireille keeps her elbows close to her body and folds her hands as though protecting an invisible stack of papers. She tilts her head toward every voice, even when pretending not to listen. When threatened, she stops fidgeting entirely, and the sudden stillness is more alarming than anger.
