Marwan ibn-Sadiq

0·Male·Medium
Neutral, with compassionate instincts increasingly warped by ritual certainty

Species

Human

Appearance

Marwan ibn-Sadiq is a narrow, stooped old man whose body seems assembled from ropes, reeds, and weathered bone. His skin has the dry, papery texture of old parchment except around his wrists and throat, where it remains perpetually damp and faintly translucent. He walks with a dragging limp, yet becomes unnervingly graceful when descending wet stairs, placing each foot as if following music no one else can hear. His face is deeply furrowed, with a nose bent from an old break and a mouth that often appears to be silently answering someone behind the listener. The unexpected contradiction is his hands: they are broad, strong, and exquisitely clean, with trimmed nails and the soft touch of a professional calligrapher. He leaves people with the impression of a kindly grandfather who has spent too long listening at a locked door.

Height5 feet 6 inches
BuildThin, sinewy, and slightly hunched, with surprising strength in his shoulders and hands
EyesClouded amber with dark flecks that drift like sediment when he is agitated
HairThin white hair, slicked backward with mineral oil, with a single black lock that has never changed color
SkinDusty olive-brown, faded and dry across the cheeks, with damp blue-gray shading at the throat and wrists

His voice is low, breathy, and carefully measured, with a faint rasp like a reed dragged across stone. During rites, his words acquire a wet echo that seems to come from the walls rather than his mouth.”

Distinguishing Features

The First Veil is a black ceramic mask veined with pale mineral deposits and fitted with tiny silver hooks.

A thin line of blue-gray discoloration circles his throat like an old bruise.

His left ear is decorated with a copper ring made from a broken sluice valve.

He carries a faint scent of wet stone, bitter herbs, and extinguished candles.

His shadow sometimes appears to ripple when he stands near still water.

Voice

A dry whisper with a submerged resonance, gentle enough to invite confidence and uncanny enough to make listeners glance toward nearby drains.

Clothing

Layered robes of faded indigo, clay red, and undyed linen, all reinforced with stitched waterproof panels. A belt of knotted cords records the Cathedral's major floods. Beneath his robes he wears a sleeveless leather harness fitted with copper prayer tubes. The First Veil is kept wrapped in oilcloth until rites begin.

Body Language

Marwan leans toward speakers as if trying to hear them through deep water. His head tilts whenever someone lies. During religious discussion, he folds his hands over his sternum, but when frightened he grips his own wrists to make sure they are still dry.
