Voice

A dry, slightly rasped voice with the carrying projection of someone used to calling across a forest. Her words land cleanly and without flourish; when she is frightened, she talks faster and gives more measurements, not softer reassurances.

Her voice has a dry, slightly rasped edge from cold mornings and years of calling across wooded distances. She speaks in direct, well-spaced phrases, often naming what she can verify rather than what she suspects. Work has made her precise about direction and distance; her childhood has left her using plain, practical words even for frightening things.

Speech patterns

Asks practical questions before answering personal ones: where, when, how many, and what did you leave behind?
Uses short, concrete comparisons drawn from tracking and weather.
When amused, offers dry observations without changing her serious expression.
Avoids promising safety; promises instead to notice trouble early.

How to play them

She offers useful help before asking for trust. Be direct about risks, show that you respect the lives of animals and people alike, and she will share what she knows. She dislikes being hurried into a promise, but a clear plan and an honest admission of uncertainty win her attention.

Goal

Find the missing cartographer and learn who is acquiring maps to the forbidden valley before another expedition is sent there.

Motivation

To prevent careless hunters from turning fear into slaughter, and to prove that the valley's inhabitants deserve to be understood before they are pursued.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Ulla looks as if she has spent years learning how not to be the most noticeable person in a room, then forgotten that the effort leaves its own impression. Her skin is weather-browned and lightly freckled; her dark hair is cut at her jaw and usually pinned back with a length of cord. She smells distinctly of crushed mint, bow wax, and rain-damp wool, a scent she notices only when someone else comments on it. Her eyes rarely settle on faces: they travel to hands, doorways, windows, and the spaces between people. She moves with a hunter's economical certainty, placing each foot as if the floor might give evidence. Unexpectedly, she carries a tiny clay bird whistle and uses it to call ordinary songbirds, not just to signal allies.

Clothing

A weather-dark green traveling coat over a fitted leather vest, close-wrapped sleeves, soft-soled boots, and a faded rust-red scarf used as a bandage, signal, or improvised sling. Her gear is secured with quiet buckles and cord rather than jangling hardware.

Body language

Keeps her shoulders loose and her hands visible in conversation. Her gaze circles the room, pausing on hands and thresholds, then returns to the speaker when something important is said. When uneasy, she rubs a thumb over the smooth edge of her bird whistle.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Ulla is patient with frightened people but impatient with anyone who mistakes confidence for competence. She jokes when a room is tense, then turns relentlessly practical when danger becomes real. She wants to believe that most beings can be reasoned with, yet she distrusts anyone who asks her to act before she has seen the ground herself. Around children and injured animals, her guarded manner gives way to surprising warmth; after a betrayal, she becomes polite only in the sense that she wastes no words.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
Names every unfamiliar bird by the sound it makes, then argues with anyone who uses a different name.
Taps the ground twice with one boot before stepping onto a bridge.
Keeps a smooth stone in her pocket and swaps it for another whenever she leaves a place alive.
When someone lies, she looks at their shoes rather than their face.

Habits

Counts exits before sitting down, then chooses the seat with the worst view of the door so others will take it.
When a plan goes wrong, she becomes brisk and decisive; after danger passes, she gets oddly quiet and checks everyone's hands for shaking.
Leaves food scraps for birds and watches which ones accept them.
Stops pursuing a quarry if it makes a clear effort to protect young or wounded companions.

Traits · 3

Makes room for uncertainty in every plan, but hates being caught unprepared.
Protects vulnerable strangers readily, yet finds it hard to ask her own friends for help.
Uses humor to steady other people while keeping her own fear private.

Flaws · 3

Withholds useful information until she has checked it herself, even when speed matters.
Treats retreat as a personal failure when someone she cares about is in danger.
Can become fixated on interpreting tracks and overlook what a frightened person is trying to tell her.

Fears · 3

Mistaking a protective creature for a threat and repeating the choice that broke her first expedition.
Discovering that the missing cartographer is alive but hiding from her for good reason.
Being forced to choose between protecting strangers and protecting the few people who still trust her.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants the missing cartographer found before the valley is exposed.
Needs to learn whether Tekk knows the truth about the expedition fire.
Needs to let other people share responsibility instead of carrying every dangerous choice alone.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 44 · 30 ft.

Ulla prefers to scout, identify the most dangerous opponent, and open from cover with her longbow. She marks a key target with Stillwater Mark when she has time, then uses mobility and terrain to keep distance. She uses Hunter's Mark against durable enemies, Zephyr Strike to escape a close threat or make a decisive reposition, and Spike Growth to discourage pursuit. She avoids needless killing and will spend an action to help an ally if the fight has turned against them.

Extra Attack. Ulla makes two attacks when she takes the Attack action.
Hunter's Prey, Colossus Slayer. Once per turn, Ulla deals an extra damage to a creature she hits with a weapon attack if that creature is below its hit point maximum.
Favored Enemy. Ulla has extensive experience tracking monstrosities and humanoid bounty targets.
Natural Explorer. Ulla is especially adept at navigating forests and tracking there.
Custom Nen Technique, Stillwater Mark. After studying a creature for one minute, Ulla can mark it for one hour. Once per turn, when she hits the marked creature with a weapon attack, she deals an extra force damage. The mark ends early if she marks another creature or becomes incapacitated. This is a character-specific adaptation of Nen concepts, not an official D&D feature.

Spells

Hunter's Mark (level 1, divination). Concentration, up to 1 hour. Ulla marks one creature she can see as her quarry. She deals an extra damage to it whenever she hits it with a weapon attack, and has advantage on Wisdom (Perception or Survival) checks to find it. The spell ends if she loses concentration or casts it again.
Zephyr Strike (level 1, transmutation). Concentration, up to 1 minute. Ulla's speed increases by 10 feet, and her movement does not provoke opportunity attacks. The first time she makes a weapon attack before the spell ends, the attack deals an extra force damage on a hit, and she can choose to gain advantage on that attack. Whether it hits or misses, her walking speed increases by 30 feet until the end of that turn.
Spike Growth (level 2, transmutation). Concentration, up to 10 minutes. Ulla causes grasping growth to fill a 20-foot-radius area on the ground within range. The area is difficult terrain. A creature moving through it takes piercing damage for every 5 feet it travels.
Hail of Thorns (level 1, conjuration). Ulla magically summons three spectral arrows. Each can target a creature she can see within range. A target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take force damage. The spell's damage increases by for each slot level above 1st.

Actions

Shortsword. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 () piercing damage. Ulla can use Dexterity for this attack.
Longbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 150/600 ft., one target. Hit: 7 () piercing damage.
Multiattack. Ulla makes two weapon attacks, using her shortsword or longbow.
Spellcasting. Ulla casts a prepared ranger spell. Her spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save , to hit with spell attacks). She has four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots.

Reactions

Cut Off the Trail. When a creature Ulla can see moves out of her reach, she can use her reaction to make one weapon attack against it. If the attack hits, the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the end of its turn. This is a custom reaction inspired by her practiced ability to anticipate a quarry's escape.

Services they sell

Tracking a creature or person through wilderness.
Guiding a small group through forest terrain.
Identifying signs of nearby beasts, traps, and recent passage.

Rewards they can give

A reliable route through the forest and a warning about its current dangers.
A detailed map to a safe campsite, if the party helps her investigate the missing cartographer.
Her trust, which can lead to a future contact among independent Hunters.

Background

Ulla grew up in a logging settlement where people learned to read snapped twigs and mud before they learned to read a map. Her mother, Heg, taught her to track lost children and injured animals; her father, Gant, taught her how to repair a bow and how to leave a place before a fight became unavoidable. At nineteen, Ulla joined a licensed expedition into a forbidden valley, hoping to prove that its supposed man-eating beast was only a story. She found instead a wounded creature guarding its young. When the expedition leader ordered her to shoot, Ulla turned her bow on the leader's lantern and gave the animals time to escape. The fire that followed killed two companions and ended her place on the expedition. That night changed her from a tracker who pursued every quarry into one who asks what a target is protecting. She later trained with a quiet Nen practitioner, learning to focus attention and intent into a disciplined mark. Now she works as an independent Hunter, searching for a missing cartographer and trying to discover who has been buying maps to the valley. Her mother still sends her practical letters; her former expedition partner, Tekk, sends warnings that sound like threats and may be either.

Role in the story

A wary guide and potential ally whose search for a missing cartographer intersects with the party's investigation. Her skill makes her useful, while her hidden responsibility for an old tragedy can complicate the group's judgment of her.
