Zanna is a compact forest gnome with a face like a carved seedpod, a blunt chin, and cheeks permanently dusted with faint silver freckles from years of powdered crystal work. She moves with quick, economical steps, but when she stops she leans forward as if listening to the floor. Her hands are never still: one thumb rubs the edge of the other palm while her fingers sketch invisible geometric shapes. Her hair rises in a dense copper-gray halo, held together by tiny brass clips, bits of red thread, and one child's wooden button. The contradictory impression she leaves is of someone both delicate and difficult to move, like a candle flame burning inside a locked lantern.
