Background

Megan was born into a household that treated names as property and expected her to live by a designation that never fit. As a young adult she left, carrying a small case of marked-up manuscripts and a determination to make language answer to the people who used it. Priscilla Dowland, an exacting vampire and proprietor of Dowland Publications, offered her work first as a proofreader, then a place at her table, and finally the surname Megan chose to share. Priscilla became her sire, but Megan insists that affection and obligation are not the same thing. The formative turning point came when a printer's apprentice was publicly exposed and threatened after a private letter was stolen. Megan risked her position to destroy the original and publish a corrected account, learning that the printed record can protect someone or make a cage around them. Now she edits controversial books, quietly finds safe lodging for transgender people in danger, and argues with Priscilla over which truths the press can afford to print. A rival publisher has begun buying up the authors' contracts that Megan hoped to secure for an independent imprint.
