Vallia Kauffman
Vallia Kauffman
At the table
Voice
Her words begin with a small intake through the nose, a habit formed from waiting for adults to finish speaking. The sound is clear and young, with the occasional catch when she has been holding a question too long. She speaks at an even pace unless excited, when she rushes the first half of a sentence and has to start its end again.
Her voice is a child's, clear and slightly breath-held at the start of a question. She speaks in short, concrete phrases and repeats an adult's own wording when she suspects it matters. She does not imitate her parents' courtly mannerisms.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Answer her plainly and at her level. If you do not know, say so rather than offering a promise. She trusts adults who remember what they told her and becomes wary of those who change their account.
Goal
Learn why John must leave for work and make him take her with him at least once.
Motivation
She wants a truthful account of her father's absences and a place beside him when he goes.
Appearance
Vallia is a small, watchful girl with light blond hair that slips from its pins and light brown eyes that stay fixed on whoever is answering her. She walks with quick, short steps, then stops so abruptly that adults nearly walk into her. Before speaking, she draws a little breath through her nose and holds it, as if waiting to see whether the answer will be true. Her old-fashioned dress has a stiff, carefully mended skirt that rustles when she turns. She leaves the impression of a question left hanging in a room.
Clothing
Anja's older German-style dress, sewn with a high neckline, long sleeves, a gathered skirt, and visible, neat repairs inside the cuffs. Vallia wears plain stockings and shoes suited to everyday use. She keeps a simple ribbon in her hair and dislikes being told the dress is too fine for play.
Body language
She plants both shoes squarely before asking something difficult. If an adult evades her, she does not fidget; she tips her chin up and waits, holding her breath for a beat before trying again.

Personality
13 traits and drivesVallia is affectionate and inquisitive, but not easily distracted once she believes a question matters. She wants to be brave for Veilchan, yet still seeks her mother's hand when the house feels too quiet. In play she can be merry and inventive; around departures she becomes intent, literal, and hard to placate. She accepts firm boundaries better than evasions.
- Alignment
- Not applicable; she is a child, not a combatant.

Background
Anja and John Kauffman married before Vallia was born. Her father, Bruke Von Braken, is a Redcap of the Autumn Court; her mother, Fantasia Von Braken, is a Sluagh of that court. Vallia has grown up knowing that her parents are not quite ordinary, though the adults have never given her a complete account of what that means. Her younger sister Veilchan is still small enough to be carried when tired. Anja sewed Vallia an older German-style dress from carefully kept cloth, and Vallia treats it as both Sunday clothing and proof that her mother can make something last. When John leaves for work with the U.S. Army, Vallia asks why he is gone and whether she can go with him. The questions began as ordinary ones. They grew insistent after a departure that came with hurried packing and explanations she could not follow. She remembers the empty space at the table more clearly than the words used to explain it. Now she watches doors, listens for news, and tries to work out what grown-ups mean when they say 'soon.'
