Appearance
Donatus is an enormous elderly man who seems to arrive several seconds before his conversation does. His shoulders are broad enough to make doorframes look narrow, and he moves with the careful, rolling balance of someone accustomed to carrying unstable machinery across wet ground. Years of court work left his hands marked by tiny ink burns and metal splinters, while farm work has roughened his knuckles and turned the skin of his forearms the color and texture of old saddle leather. His beard is clipped short in front but grows in a stubborn silver wedge beneath his jaw. He smells faintly of lamp oil, crushed mint, damp soil, and overheated brass. The unexpected contradiction is that his terrifying volume and massive frame are paired with extraordinarily delicate hands, capable of threading a needle through a moth's wing or repairing a clockwork bird without breaking its spring.
“A deep, resonant bellow with a rural Newces cadence and occasional clipped Levantine and Welsh-inspired turns of phrase. He speaks quickly when excited, loudly when embarrassed, and with unnerving precision when discussing the Monarch.”

Distinguishing Features
His voice carries across open fields with startling force, and nearby birds often take flight when he begins an argument.
A brass thumb cap covers his left thumb, replacing the nail he ruined during an experiment, but he treats it as a useful tool rather than an injury.
His beard has been singed into a permanently uneven wedge by a failed grain-drying engine.
He wears spectacles with rotating lenses that click audibly whenever he becomes suspicious.
He unconsciously measures distances by pacing, even during ordinary conversations.
Voice
“A deep, resonant voice capable of carrying across a mile of open farmland. It has the physical force of a thrown object, but when he is grieving or discussing the Monarch it drops into a dry, controlled murmur.”
Clothing
A patched oxblood work coat reinforced with hidden brass plates, broad gray trousers tucked into mud-caked boots, a sleeveless leather apron crowded with tools, and a faded court sash repurposed as a belt. His coat pockets contain far too many gauges, fuses, screws, seed packets, and folded political pamphlets.
Body Language
He plants his feet like a siege engine, points with entire arms rather than fingers, and leans dangerously close when making a technical point. When ashamed, he polishes an object that is already clean. When genuinely afraid, he becomes perfectly still and lowers his voice to a frightening whisper.
