Appearance
Captain Thrain Stone-Shield is a broad, square-built dwarf whose presence feels less like that of a soldier and more like a load-bearing pillar that learned to walk. His beard is iron-gray, tightly braided with copper wire and blackened furnace thread, and the lower half is singed into uneven curls from decades beside open smelters. One eye is living hazel, sharp and suspicious. The other is a brass-reinforced ocular plate set into scar tissue, its tiny shutters clicking faintly whenever it focuses. His left arm is puckered with old burns and crossed by thick surgical seams, making the limb look jointed from hammered leather. He walks with a heavy, measured tread, yet can pivot with startling speed when danger appears. The contradictory impression is unmistakable: he looks brutally immovable, but moves like a veteran dancer who knows exactly where every foot must land. He smells faintly of coal dust, rosemary salve, and hot metal.
“A low, rasping baritone with the clipped rhythm of shouted orders across machinery. He pauses before names, as if weighing whether the person has earned the breath required to say them.”

Distinguishing Features
Brass-reinforced left eye with clicking aperture shutters
Shield arm covered in layered burn scars and surgical seams
A triangular notch missing from his beard where it caught fire during the Blackspan Collapse
Command shield made from a section of the collapsed bridge's central brace
Yellow worker's cloth tied around his wrist beneath his gauntlet
Voice
“A furnace-deep voice, dry and deliberate, becoming painfully quiet when he is most furious.”
Clothing
Blackened scale armor beneath a red-brown command coat reinforced with overlapping leather plates. His collar bears three dull brass bars, his boots have heat-resistant soles, and a strip of yellow worker's cloth is tied around his wrist as a reminder of the Blackspan dead.
Body Language
He plants his feet as if testing the floor's integrity, keeps his shield arm slightly forward, and turns his brass eye toward any source of sudden heat or movement. When listening sincerely, he removes one glove and rests his scarred hand flat on the table. When lying, he polishes the rim of his shield with his thumb.
