Noncombatant Archivist
Malthus Vance
Species
Human
Appearance
Malthus is a narrow, ash-pale man whose movements are so measured that he seems to glide between shelves rather than walk. His skin has the dry texture of old parchment, crossed at the knuckles by faint black lines resembling ink cracks. His left cheek bears a circular burn where a guild seal once branded him, yet the scar remains unnaturally cool to the touch. His silver hair is combed flat except for one stubborn lock that points toward the nearest sealed document. He leaves behind the scent of lamp oil, iron filings, and rain on stone. Despite his severe, funerary appearance, he has an unexpectedly delicate smile and handles frightened children with the tenderness of a nurse.
“Low, dry, and carefully paced. His voice rarely rises above a murmur, forcing listeners to lean closer.”

Distinguishing Features
A cool circular seal-burn on his left cheek
Black ink-like cracks across his knuckles
A single silver hair lock that always points toward the nearest sealed document
Thirteen numbered keys worn at his belt
A habit of smiling gently while delivering devastatingly precise accusations
Voice
“A restrained baritone with the faint rasp of paper dragged across brass”
Clothing
A charcoal archivist's coat reinforced with leather panels and stitched inner pockets, a high linen collar stained gray by forge dust, fingerless gloves marked with wax, and a belt carrying thirteen numbered keys. His boots are soft-soled to avoid disturbing the Vault's listening wards.
Body Language
Malthus keeps his hands folded behind his back until someone lies, at which point one finger slowly taps against his wrist. He tilts his head toward written words as if listening to them. In moments of anger, he becomes perfectly still, with only the brass chain of his seal case trembling against his coat.
