Yunara
Yunara
At the table
Voice
A low, dry-edged voice with a small catch of breath before the first word, as if she has learned to wait for permission even when none is required. Her throat has a faint rasp from kiln smoke in childhood and palace dust in adulthood. She enunciates court titles crisply; with servants, her vowels soften and her sentences loosen.
Her phrasing is measured and exact, shaped by years of formal court instruction. She rarely wastes words, but when discussing kilns or mountain weather she becomes unexpectedly detailed. She avoids pleading language and names coercion plainly when she feels safe enough to do so.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat her as a person rather than a possession. Speak plainly, give her room to choose, and do not touch the chain or her body without permission. She responds best to concrete offers, especially those that reduce risk to palace servants. If approached with threats, she becomes controlled and watchful rather than pleading.
Goal
Recover the forged debt record, secure her release, and find her mother without leaving palace servants to bear the consequences alone.
Motivation
To reclaim control over her own choices while protecting those with even less power than she has.
Appearance
Yunara is tall, bronze-skinned, and built like a dancer trained to stop on a blade's edge. Fine copper scales catch along her cheekbones and forearms, their edges matte as hammered foil; her narrow draconic snout and swept-back horns give her profile a clean, forward sweep. Her amber eyes keep dropping toward the crouched attendant at her ankles, watchful and sorrowful rather than vacant. A russet-tufted tail curls around the palace rail with careful, spring-ready tension. Her bare clawed feet are dust-marked, gold-painted nails scuffed at the tips; the thick shackle chain drapes between ruby anklets, heavy enough to pull at her stance. She holds herself in disciplined stillness, yet every knee and shoulder looks ready to turn that stillness into motion. The unexpected detail is the little wooden spinning top tucked safely into her breastplate, its paint worn away by years of handling.
Clothing
Emerald velvet courtwear beneath a ruby-set light iron breastplate; a very thin russet sash at the hips, ruby-ornamented iron calf guards, a ruby collar, and ruby anklets locked to a thick trailing restraint chain. The chain is a mark of her coerced status, not a chosen adornment. Bare, dust-marked clawed feet and gold-painted nails contrast with the formal armor.
Body language
Her posture is formally lowered around nobles, but never slack: heels light, shoulders aligned, hands visible. The tail often wraps a rail or chair leg as if quietly anchoring her. When a servant is in danger, her head lifts and her whole body squares toward the threat; the change is immediate and unmistakable.

Distinguishing features
Personality
14 traits and drivesYunara is deferential in posture but privately difficult to command: she learned to survive by appearing compliant while judging each order for its cost. She is patient with frightened people and impatient with excuses from the powerful. In public ceremony she is controlled and almost motionless; with trusted servants she can be unexpectedly wry and playful. When frightened, she becomes more formal, not more submissive, and when angered she speaks directly and moves decisively.
- Alignment
- Protective and pragmatic; she distrusts imposed authority but keeps promises she has freely made.

Background
Yunara was hatched in a mountain pass settlement where her mother, a kiln keeper, taught her to read heat by the color of clay. At thirteen, a palace levy took her after a border lord declared her kin's forge debt unpaid. She was trained as a ceremonial guard and dancer, then sold through the court when the lord's household collapsed. Her disciplined posture was learned under Master Odrik, a stern instructor who taught her that balance could preserve a life as readily as a blade could end one. The turning point came during a winter procession: ordered to hold a gate while a crowd was crushed outside, she disobeyed and opened it. A child survived; Yunara was chained for the breach, and the memory changed obedience from a virtue into a choice she examines. Now palace attendant Kestik secretly brings her news from the kitchens, while the old instructor still hopes she will return to service. Yunara is trying to locate her mother and prove the forge debt was fabricated, even as the court prepares to send her as a bodyguard to a distant marriage delegation.
Role in the story
A coerced palace guard whose apparent compliance conceals a careful campaign to recover her freedom and protect the servants around her. She can become an ally, a source of palace knowledge, or the moral center of a conflict over debt and consent.
