Appearance
Mara Venn looks weatherworn in the way old harbor rope is weatherworn, frayed but still holding fast. She has a narrow face, salt-burned cheeks, and hands stained with ink, lamp soot, and grave-dirt. Her movement is quick and economical, yet she pauses often to listen as if expecting the world to answer back. The strangest thing about her is her wardrobe: she wears a severe charcoal mourning dress beneath a bright yellow rain cloak patched at the hem, as though grief and stubborn hope have agreed to share the same body.
“Measured and exact, with the cadence of someone reading a ledger aloud, but it softens into a low, intimate murmur when she speaks of the missing or the dead..”

Distinguishing Features
A silver ring hung on a cord around her neck, engraved inside with the names of six missing villagers
A faded burn scar shaped like a chapel arch on her left wrist
Ink-black crescents beneath her nails from constant ledger work
A laugh that appears at the wrong times, usually when she is close to crying
Voice
“Low, clear, and slightly hoarse, as if she has spent too many evenings speaking names into cold air.”
Clothing
Charcoal mourning dress, yellow rain cloak, waterproof boots, wool gloves with the fingertips cut free, and a satchel full of folded maps, candles, and sealed letters
Body Language
She stands with one shoulder slightly forward, as though perpetually bracing against a cold wind. Her fingers are always busy, folding paper, twisting a cord, or rubbing a thumb across a ring engraved with names.
