Appearance
Heshan is a compact, weather-browned man whose body has the dense, ropey strength of someone who has spent decades lifting wet sacks and turning stubborn earth. His jaw is broad and slightly overdeveloped, giving his face a patient, carved look until he laughs. When he eats, he chews with deliberate care, showing small, square teeth stained faintly green from years of chewing bitter herb stems. His lower lip tucks inward when he thinks. He moves with a slow, measured stoop in public, but the moment something threatens a child, a chicken, or a boundary marker, he becomes startlingly quick and balanced. His clothes hang badly from years of mending and from a body that has grown narrower at the waist, yet one deep blue sash around his ribs is washed, folded, and repaired with almost ceremonial precision. His overall impression is of a tired old root that could still crack a stone.
“Low, dry, and unhurried, with a breathy sibilance on words containing s and sh. He pronounces names carefully, pauses before disagreeing, and lets silence make half his arguments.”

Distinguishing Features
A broad, expressive jaw and small square teeth visible whenever he chews or laughs.
A blue sash repaired with hundreds of tiny, nearly invisible stitches.
A walking stick carved with irrigation symbols rather than decorative designs.
His left thumbnail is permanently darkened by soil, no matter how carefully he washes.
He smells faintly of crushed mint, wet clay, and smoke from olive-wood fires.
Voice
“A low, dry baritone with a gentle rasp, like reeds rubbing together in a night breeze. His consonants hiss softly, and his voice becomes unexpectedly tender when speaking to children or injured animals.”
Clothing
A patched umber wool coat, loose undyed trousers tucked into cracked leather sandals, a faded blue sash wrapped twice around his ribs, and a broad straw hat repaired with red thread. Every garment is practical and badly fitted except the sash, which he maintains with obsessive care.
Body Language
He keeps both hands folded over his walking stick when listening, but one thumb constantly rubs the same worn notch in the wood. When angry, he stops blinking and turns his head slightly, as though listening to water beneath the floor.
