Lutaki
Lutaki
At the table
Voice
A low, dry voice with a faint rasp, like a whetstone drawn over wood. It carries easily over the tavern din because he has learned to project from his chest without shouting. When something rattles him, the breath catches in two clicks before he can finish his sentence.
His words are spare and practical, shaped by years of calling orders across a crowded room and by the measured breathwork of his monastery. He places a small rasp on hard consonants, as though each sentence has passed through kitchen smoke. When frightened, a dry double click interrupts his breathing; when angry, his words become more direct, not louder.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with practical kindness: offer food, a seat, or a place to rest. If questioned about the cellar, do not lie outright, but deflect until the party proves it can keep a confidence. If they threaten the creature, he becomes immovable and asks them to meet it before deciding what it is.
Goal
Keep the inn a safe haven while learning what the creature's new tapping means before fear or hunger drives it through the cellar floor.
Motivation
Lutaki believes that a creature's danger is not proof that it deserves cruelty. He wants to protect people without abandoning the one living thing that once trusted him.
Appearance
Lutaki is a broad, long-limbed half-orc with deep olive skin, the sheen of well-oiled wood, and a calm face that seems built to put frightened people at ease. His hair is cropped close except for a stiff, bristled strip at the crown; his tusks are filed smooth from years of catching on tankards. He moves with a tavernkeeper's careful economy, sliding between chairs without disturbing a cup. Within a minute, most guests notice the smell of juniper soap and iron-rich raw meat clinging to his sleeves. When rattled, his breath catches in a dry, double click at the back of his throat, then resumes as if nothing happened. Unexpectedly, he keeps a pocket-sized book of pressed flowers and carefully labels each one.
Clothing
A clean, charcoal linen shirt beneath a russet apron patched with careful, nearly invisible stitches. He wears a corded belt, soft-soled boots, and a dark green scarf that can cover his mouth in the smoky kitchen.
Body language
He turns his whole torso toward whoever is speaking and keeps his hands visible, palms relaxed. He stands with his feet planted as though balancing a loaded tray. When anxious, his jaw works once and his breathing catches in two small clicks; his eyes go to the floorboards before he can stop them.

Personality
12 traits and drivesGentle with the tired and firm with the cruel, Lutaki would rather absorb an insult than turn a guest away. Yet his kindness has a stubborn, controlling edge: he decides what others can safely know and calls that protection. In a crisis he becomes brisk and decisive; when alone, he fusses over flowers and speaks to the cellar as if reassuring a frightened child.

Background
Lutaki learned to cook and keep accounts at his aunt's roadside inn, where travelers judged him by his tusks before they judged the stew. At twenty, he joined a monastery whose teachers believed discipline meant making pain useful. He left after a winter flood trapped the monks and several villagers in a collapsed undercroft. A starving, malformed creature was trapped there too, swollen with strange growths and unable to speak. Lutaki spent three nights passing it stolen meat through a crack in the stone. When the flood receded, the creature did not attack the survivors; it followed the scent of his cooking and hid beneath the abandoned inn. Lutaki bought the property and made it a refuge, building a reinforced cellar hatch and quietly feeding the creature. His former sparring partner, Temba, now a city watch sergeant, visits monthly and suspects Lutaki is sheltering something dangerous. The inn's butcher, Jori, supplies cheap offcuts without asking why the cellar reeks of blood. Lately the creature has begun to strike the cellar floor in a pattern that resembles the monastery's old warning bell.
