Argus Buckland
Argus Buckland
At the table
Voice
His voice is a child's, a little rasped from crying and dry crypt air. His breath sometimes hitches before a word, and when he is frightened he speaks in quick, shallow bursts. Around his uncle, his breathing steadies and his words come more readily.
He uses short, plain phrases and often answers with a nod or shake of the head. Under stress, words catch in his throat and come out in uneven bursts; when safe, he asks earnest questions about familiar things.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach slowly, keep hands visible, and let him choose how close to stand. Do not make promises about his finger or demand that he recount the crypt. Kaitlyn or his uncle can help him feel safe enough to speak.
Goal
To stay close to Kaitlyn and his uncle, sleep somewhere safe, and find out what will happen to his injured finger.
Motivation
Safety, reassurance, and the certainty that his sister will remain close.
Appearance
Argus has the narrow, soft-cheeked face of a child who has not slept well, and a habit of leaning his weight toward the nearest exit. He keeps his injured little finger wrapped against his palm, the bandage faintly smelling of clean linen and sharp spirits. When he moves, he takes quick, uneven steps, then stops so abruptly his coat hem swings past him. His unexpected detail is the small, careful way he tends a sprig of common mint tucked in his pocket, rubbing its leaves between thumb and forefinger when panic loosens its grip.
Clothing
A rumpled, once-fine dark green wool coat over a linen shirt, knee-length breeches, stockings, and scuffed shoes. Dust from the crypt still clings in the seams; one cuff is damp from tears and the bandage around his injured hand is freshly changed.
Body language
He holds his shoulders high and angles his body toward a doorway. When someone reaches toward him, his injured hand tucks behind his back and his breath catches audibly. With Kaitlyn or his uncle, his weight shifts forward and he may suddenly grab a sleeve or embrace them.

Background
Argus was raised at the Buckland family manor alongside his older sister, Kaitlyn, in rooms where polished wood smelled of beeswax and every ancestor seemed to watch from a painted frame. A recent ordeal left him and Kaitlyn trapped in the family crypt. When the adventurers found them, Argus cried, shrank away, wet himself, and refused to leave. During the rescue, the party's dog bit off his little finger. Someone assured him it would grow back and threw something at him; the words and gesture have lodged in his mind more firmly than the explanation. The party later recovered the finger. Argus remained terrified as they escorted the siblings toward Buckland Commons, where he ran to embrace his uncle. His uncle took him to the manor to rest, but the crypt's darkness, the injury, and the strange promise about regrowth remain unresolved in his thoughts.
Role in the story
