Species
Void Spider
Appearance
Skarrath has the low, broad body of a colossal scorpion, but eight muscular tentacles replace his legs and ripple beneath him like black ropes dragged through deep water. His carapace is layered in overlapping plates that resemble hammered iron glazed with oil, each ridge catching colors that are not present in the room. His front pincers rest near his chest and can unfold into long, straight voidblades with edges too thin to reflect light. When he uses them as hands, each pincer splits into three precise chitinous digits. He moves with unnerving silence for something so large, then suddenly crosses a room in a blur of whipping limbs. Within a minute of meeting him, people notice that his eyes do not look at faces. They settle instead on throats, wrists, doorways, and the hands of anyone carrying a weapon. The unexpected contradiction is his careful tenderness with small objects. He handles children's toys, letters, and delicate glassware with the patience of a jeweler, even while discussing massacres.
“His speech is formal, clipped, and unnervingly articulate. He uses old human military terminology mixed with metaphors about webs, pressure, and feeding.”

Distinguishing Features
His tentacles make no natural sound, but produce a faint dry clicking when he is emotionally agitated.
The Monarch's sigil appears to move beneath the translucent plates of his throat when he speaks the Monarch's name.
His pincers can become either elegant, dexterous hands or unnaturally straight black blades within seconds.
He smells faintly of wet stone, old iron, and crushed citrus peel.
He keeps a tiny clay horse tucked beneath his mantle, one of the few possessions that survived his human life.
Voice
“A deep, dry baritone with a faint second resonance beneath it, as if another voice is repeating his words from far underground. He rarely raises his volume. The quieter he becomes, the closer he is to violence.”
Clothing
A high-collared general's mantle made from layered red-black membrane hangs across his upper carapace, fastened with bronze disks bearing the Monarch's many-eyed sigil. He wears a belt of captured officer seals, a map case sealed in wax, and a narrow human sash that once belonged to Mairi's mother.
Body Language
His tentacles remain almost perfectly still when he is calm, arranged in a deliberate fan beneath his body. When angered, they begin tapping in staggered rhythms, like impatient drummers. His bladed pincers stay folded close to his chest during negotiations, but one fingertip repeatedly traces the edge of the other. He leans toward frightened people with unsettling attentiveness rather than looming over them.
