Mikko Borzhan
Mikko Borzhan
At the table
Voice
His voice is chest-resonant and slightly roughened by dust, cold air, and years of calling orders across open ground. It has the steady carrying quality of someone used to being heard over wagons and battle noise, without sounding theatrical. When amused, a dry rasp breaks through; when furious, the words come faster and hit like commands.
He speaks in a grounded, workmanlike cadence, using short instructions when lives are at stake and longer explanations when teaching. His vocabulary carries traces of camp labor and command: ropes, loads, ground, timing. He swallows the ends of words when tired, but pronounces names carefully. His humor is dry rather than loud, and his anger comes out as forceful, explicit demands, not a change to a whisper.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Samir responds to competence and plain dealing. He will share what he knows if doing so protects people or improves their chances, but he will not trade a prisoner's safety for a promise he cannot verify. Treat him as a person with duties, not as a weapon to point at a problem. He is willing to negotiate with enemies who show restraint, and he expects anyone asking for his trust to accept a fair share of the risk.
Goal
Survive captivity, protect the prisoners around him, and return to the front without letting his need to win make him careless with lives.
Motivation
He believes a commander earns authority by taking the same risks as the people who follow him. He wants to win the war, but not at the price of becoming the sort of leader who sees ordinary lives as expendable.
Appearance
Samir is so tall that ordinary door lintels seem designed to test him. His olive skin is weathered bronze, and his long black hair is usually tied at the nape with a strip of faded linen. His hands are broad and blunt, the knuckles thickened from hauling beams and wielding weapons; a pale band of callus crosses each palm where rope used to bite. When waiting, he plants his feet wide and rests his weight on the balls of them, like a man braced for a sudden shove. He moves with a laborer's economy until trouble starts, when his reach and speed make the change startling. The unexpected detail is that he keeps a tiny, carefully mended paper kite tucked into his belt, its bright tail utterly out of place among a general's grim gear.
Clothing
A battered officer's coat worn over a quilted gambeson, both patched with rough, practical stitching. His belts and straps are repaired rather than replaced. In captivity he has been stripped of most military insignia, but a plain fastening pin from his wife's family remains sewn inside his collar.
Body language
He stands as if a heavy load might arrive at any moment, feet planted wide and weight forward. He makes room for smaller people without calling attention to it. In captivity, he taps a thumb against the bars in a measured rhythm, then goes very still when someone lies.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesSamir is candid and approachable with his troops, but formal and guarded among nobles. He enjoys a rough joke and the satisfaction of a clean plan, yet has little patience for boasting that ignores the cost of failure. He is tender in practical ways, such as mending a strap or remembering someone's family, and awkward when asked to speak openly about affection. Under pressure he becomes decisive and frighteningly aggressive; after battle, he checks on the wounded before accepting praise.

Combat
AC 15 · HP 75 · 40 ft.Samir uses terrain and timing before force, looking for a choke point, a vulnerable standard-bearer, or a way to make the enemy bunch up. He fights at the front to steady his troops, uses Reckless Attack when a decisive hit matters more than his own safety, and rages when the line is close to breaking. He avoids chasing fleeing enemies if doing so would expose his soldiers. In a prison escape, he would rather disable guards quietly and get everyone out than indulge a revenge killing.

Background
Samir Borzhan was born to a family of tenant farmers on the dry uplands of the Lintanar Empire. His parents had no standing to secure him a military enlistment, so he entered the army as a civilian laborer, shifting stone, mending roads, and hauling siege timbers. During the disastrous crossing at the Hushwater Ford, a Szithan attack scattered the officers and trapped a company on the wrong bank. Samir took command of the laborers, used carts and broken timbers to dam a side channel, and led the trapped soldiers across under fire. The company survived, and the field commission he earned that day became the first rung of a startling rise through the ranks. He learned that plans mattered most when mud, panic, and wounded people made the original plan impossible. His victories brought him wealth and a marriage to Seshaya, a Yotunn noblewoman whose family had once considered him beneath notice. At a noble dinner, a guest publicly insulted Seshaya's birth and implied she had married for rank. Samir challenged the insult without threatening the man, demanded a formal retraction, and stood firm until it was given. She has remained cool in public and sparing with affection, but loves him fiercely for seeing her dignity as worth defending. Samir knows this and would not trade their marriage for an easier one. Now the Szithan Empire has taken him prisoner after a costly retreat. He is held in a camp near the Silt-Bend, where captors want intelligence and his soldiers need a reason not to give up.
Role in the story
A captured general whose rescue could restore morale to Lintanar troops, complicate the war, or reveal that the campaign is not as straightforward as either empire claims. He can be a powerful ally, but his honor and his fear of needless deaths may put him at odds with characters who favor expedient brutality.
