Olin
Olin
At the table
Voice
His voice has the dry, open quality of someone used to calling across fields and through trees. It carries easily without sounding trained. When rattled, his breathing catches high in his chest and his next words come too fast; once he steadies himself, he speaks in short, grounded phrases.
Friendly but plain, with a quick, practical cadence shaped by outdoor work and years of listening before speaking. He can be loud and talkative when sent to socialize, though he keeps a careful distance. His accent and word choices shift faintly with regions he has spent time in, sometimes including scraps of languages he barely knows.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet him plainly and give him room; he dislikes being crowded or treated like a curiosity. Earn trust through practical help, honest competition, or respect for the people who live on his land. Do not press him to name a father. If he is rude, a direct challenge or an equally direct boundary works better than elaborate etiquette.
Goal
Become skilled and self-reliant enough that no one can define his worth by uncertain parentage, while protecting the ordinary people he considers his own.
Motivation
His ambition comes from uncertainty: if he cannot know what made him, he will make himself impossible to dismiss. Beneath the bravado, he wants a safe home and a family that does not make him choose between blood and belonging.
Appearance
Olin looks like a rangy, sun-warmed farm boy who has spent more time outdoors than indoors. His wheat-blond hair is clipped close around the ears and brushed forward with practical care; sun catches gold in it. His skin tans deep in summer and fades noticeably in winter, while his bright blue eyes keep watch even when the rest of him seems at ease. He stands taller than most his age, broad through the shoulders, and carries unusual strength with a slight lack of calibration: he can crack a chair rail by leaning on it. He walks with a hunter's quiet, economical steps, but his posture has none of a courtier's polish. Within a minute, people notice that he takes a measured breath before answering difficult questions, and that when rattled his breath catches audibly before he covers it with a blunt remark. His grooming is practical and consistent, an incongruously tidy fringe above mud-marked boots.
Clothing
A plain linen shirt, patched wool waistcoat, weathered hunting coat, sturdy breeches, and high boots suited to mud and brambles. He wears a plain leather belt with a knife sheath and a small pouch of shot. He dislikes stiff imported finery and will not wear lace unless someone makes it a condition of the visit.
Body language
He plants his feet as if testing the ground, rests a thumb near the bowstring, and watches hands more than faces. With people he trusts, he leans in without noticing; with strangers, he keeps a deliberate arm's length. His smile is quick and boyish, but it vanishes when someone mentions his parentage. When alarmed, his chest stops moving for a beat and his jaw works as if he is swallowing a word.

Combat
AC 16 · HP 44 · 30 ft.He chooses cover, range, and a clean line of sight before combat begins. He opens with longbow fire against dangerous or exposed foes, uses his movement to keep distance, and makes two attacks when pressed. He avoids close combat, but uses his hatchet if cornered. Against an unknown supernatural threat, his lack of magical sight is a serious liability.

Background
Arthur, the place-born embodiment of England, gave him the single name Olin and raised him as his son. Olin grew faster than anyone expected, outgrowing a younger northern brother and earning the uneasy attention of adults who thought a place-born child should develop more slowly. Rumors about whether Berwald, Nils, Allister, Rhys, Reilly, or someone else sired him have followed him since childhood. Olin treats Arthur as his father whether by blood or conviction, but privately regrets not knowing the truth. He remembers his mother in fragments, some tender and some he avoids examining. His earliest years held a rare peace: woods, small chores, and the comfort of belonging somewhere. That ended as his homeland grew louder and more divided. Watching ordinary people suffer while distant authorities argued changed his loyalty from obedience to protection. He is kind to his own people across class lines, yet can be callous toward outsiders, especially Europeans and the few native place-born he does not understand. Even so, their stories of thunderbirds and horned serpents draw him in, offering a vocabulary for things he cannot explain. Arthur sends him to socialize with Ludwig, a German place-born, in hopes of teaching him European manners. Olin began by needling Ludwig and now finds himself softening toward him. He hunts and traps for a living, competes for money at shooting matches, and is trying to learn what his changing sense of self means before someone else decides for him.
Role in the story
A skilled teenage hunter who can guide the party, provide a grounded view of his homeland's ordinary people, or become a volatile ally when their interests overlap. His family history and strange regional shifts can draw the party into questions of identity, territory, and the difference between ancestry and chosen kin.
“Rumors about whether Berwald, Nils, Allister, Rhys, Reilly, or someone else sired him have followed him since childhood.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. He identifies first with the people of his homeland, though his idea of kinship is narrow and often unfair.
