Pieter Goldwater
Pieter Goldwater
At the table
Voice
A clear, slightly breathy voice with a dry rasp from workshop dust and years of speaking over machinery. His words have the brisk, measured rhythm of someone mentally checking parts as he talks. A sudden laugh is more open than his careful manner suggests; a sharp retort arrives cleanly, without a growl or a hush.
Pieter speaks with the clipped practicality of someone used to working beside noisy tools. He names objects precisely and often frames a thought as a diagnosis: something is binding, loose, or under strain. His speech carries traces of harbor-town Gnomish phrasing and a quick, breathy exhale when he is amused. When he is angry, his consonants become sharper and he stops using jokes, but his voice does not soften or drop into a theatrical whisper.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Pieter as a capable young adult rather than a spectacle. He responds well to practical offers, honest questions, and people who ask before touching his wings or tail. He becomes guarded if anyone speaks of a cure before asking what he wants. Show concern for his siblings without making him responsible for solving every family problem.
Goal
Keep his family together through the Turnings, learn what happened to the distant relative, and remain visible in his own town without being treated as a problem to hide.
Motivation
Love for his siblings, pride in his craft, and a need to decide what his inheritance means before other people decide for him.
Appearance
Pieter Goldwater looks like a young craftsman caught halfway through becoming something out of an old dragon-tale. His face retains a few soft gnomish proportions, but a long, fine-boned jaw, subtly pointed teeth, and the intent stillness of a gold dragon dominate the impression. Tiny metallic scales lie almost flush along his temples, shoulder blades, and the outside of his forearms, easy to mistake for unusually bright freckles until the light catches them. His broad, sail-like wings are still growing: supple gold membranes stretch between narrow, jointed supports, folded upright when he rests and tucked close when he works. A long, flexible tail trails behind him, its fine scales making a dry whisper over the floorboards. He turns his torso in smooth, sinuous motions rather than stepping around obstructions. Asleep, he sprawls on his belly or curls into a loose coil, wings tented over his back. He has the unexpected habit of wearing his goggles pushed up over his hat even indoors, their lenses polished to a mirror shine although their leather strap is permanently darkened with oil.
Clothing
Practical Dutch-inspired workshop clothes: a stout, weatherproof jacket, layered shirt, wide belt, reinforced trousers, and sturdy boots. The jacket has hand-sewn openings and ties that let his wings fold without tearing the seams. He wears a flat-crowned work hat and round leather-strapped goggles, plus a tool apron repaired with mismatched patches.
Body language
Pieter stands poised on the balls of his feet, shoulders slightly forward as if ready to reach a high shelf. His tail makes small, unintentional counter-movements whenever he turns, and the wings twitch when he is startled. He angles his body to avoid knocking things over, often rotating from the waist with a smooth, serpentine economy. When he is anxious, he sets both hands flat on a surface and presses down as though checking that the world is solid.

Personality
16 traits and drivesPieter is proud of being useful and uncomfortable with being praised for simply enduring. He can be warm, quick with a joke, and patient with a novice at the workbench, yet becomes rigid when someone treats his body as a family embarrassment. He wants his parents to trust him, but distrusts the way their fear makes them speak in careful half-truths. His protective instincts toward Nils and Anji are genuine; so is his irritation when they tell him to stop hovering. When calm, he listens more than he speaks and notices tiny mechanical faults. When frightened, he turns every worry into a task and tries to fix it alone. When angry, he is direct and surprisingly hard to distract, but guilt often follows once the immediate danger passes.

AC 12 · HP 22 · 30 ft.Pieter is a level-5 commoner, not a trained adventurer, and his challenge rating is not equivalent to a level-5 player character. He tries to get between danger and his siblings, use a shove or improvised tool to create an escape route, and retreat toward cover. He does not yet know how to fly. If cornered, he fights desperately but is likely to protect others rather than pursue an enemy.

Background
The Goldwaters are known throughout their harbor town for building things that last: windlass gears, ship fittings, compact pumps, and the small brass instruments used to measure a safe passage through the island channels. Their workshop stands where a narrow canal meets the quay. Its shutters are painted blue, its roof rattles in hard rain, and the sign above the door shows two interlocking gears. Pieter grew up beneath that sign, learning to sort screws before he could reach the highest workbench. His parents, Hanne and Boro, are Low-blooded Aureates. They have familiar gnomish features, sturdy builds, and a family history in which draconic inheritance was something to be proud of, but seldom dramatic. When Pieter was born, neighbors called him a blessing: the first High-blooded child in the household, a rare affirmation of the Goldwaters' old golden-dragon ancestry. No one understood how pronounced that inheritance might become. As a child, Pieter looked nearly ordinary. He was taller than the other children, quick to learn a tool's balance, and prone to staring at sunlight on water. At puberty, the Turning arrived with deep aches, sudden hunger, feverish nights, and a temper that could flash and vanish before anyone understood its cause. His bones lengthened; his shoulders broadened; gold scales appeared along his back. Then, one morning, a sharp pain between his shoulder blades tore his work shirt. A pair of folded wings emerged, followed over the next weeks by a tail that knocked a tray of freshly machined fittings off the bench. His strength came just as suddenly. He lifted a jammed iron press without thinking, then watched his father go white with fear. The family tried to make the changes private. Hanne ordered loose shirts and told the neighbors Pieter had strained his back. Boro asked a physician to look for a discreet cure. Pieter understood their fear, but he heard the difference between concern for his health and shame about being seen. The turning point came when a visiting High-blooded client, Master Serev, saw Pieter's wings and spoke plainly: the changes were unusual, not necessarily an illness, and a distant Goldwater relative had once become “too much a dragon” after a troubled Turning. Serev would not explain what that meant. Before leaving, he advised the family to watch for changes in judgment and appetite, not just scales and bone. Pieter's parents were reassured by his calm, but the warning lodged in Pieter's mind. Pieter refused to be hidden. He began wearing his work clothes altered to fit his wings, and took his place at the shop counter even when customers stared. His first public appearance was not a triumph. A child cried; a customer left; someone called him a beast. Pieter was furious, then ashamed of how much that insult mattered. He spent the evening repairing a broken toy for the crying child and returned it the next day without asking for thanks. Since then he has taken pride in being useful in plain sight. He is determined that nobody gets to define him solely by his body. His younger sister Anji, seventeen, is Low-blooded and has begun her own Turning. She hides her aches behind jokes and refuses to let Pieter fuss over her. His brother Nils, fifteen, is showing symptoms that frighten Pieter most: exhaustion, strange hunger, and a new bright sheen at his hairline. Pieter watches him too closely, then pretends he is only checking whether Nils has been eating. Nils has noticed. Anji has noticed both of them and is tired of being treated like a fragile parcel. Their parents try to keep the household steady, but every new symptom turns a family meal into a silent examination. Meanwhile, Pieter has taken on more responsibility at the shop than his parents intended. He can move heavy stock and reach awkward rigging, but his new tail catches on clamps and his wings make narrow aisles difficult. A rival fittings-maker has begun telling customers that the Goldwaters' workshop is unsafe. Pieter wants to prove that his body is no obstacle and that his family need not buy a cure from anyone. His parents have quietly approached a travelling physician with an offer of payment; Pieter does not know whether that physician can help or whether the appointment is meant to make him disappear from the neighborhood for a while. Pieter's life is not a quest to become a dragon. He wants to finish a set of harbor winches with his father, keep Anji and Nils from facing the Turning alone, and learn what happened to the relative who was “too much a dragon.” He fears that the warning describes a real danger, but fears even more that his family will use it to justify hiding him. For now, he keeps showing up to work, keeps repairing what breaks, and keeps his wings visible even when they ache.
