Appearance
Odran is a narrow, long-limbed man whose stillness is more noticeable than his height. He moves with the careful economy of someone carrying a full cup across a moving ship, placing each foot silently and turning his whole body before his head. His skin has the dry olive tone of parchment kept near a lamp, and his hands are heavily ink-stained at the fingertips, though the rest of him is meticulously clean. He wears a brass reading lens suspended from a black cord, not over one eye but resting against his sternum when unused. The lens is polished bright everywhere except along its lower rim, where years of rubbing against his ledger have worn the brass nearly silver. His eyes rarely settle on faces. Within a minute of meeting someone, most people notice that he is studying door hinges, exits, lamps, hands, and the distance between chairs. His most contradictory feature is his smile, which is unexpectedly warm and boyish, appearing whenever he catches a rule behaving cruelly or foolishly.
“Quiet, measured, and grammatically exact. He leaves deliberate pauses before important words, rarely raises his volume, and becomes more formal as his anger increases.”

Distinguishing Features
A brass reading lens hangs at his chest, its lower rim polished nearly silver from years of rubbing against his ledger.
His fingertips are permanently marked with layered blue-black ink, with a clean crescent beneath each fingernail.
He looks at exits, hands, locks, and lamps before looking at faces.
He carries himself with near-silent precision, as though every floorboard has a written complaint attached to it.
His unexpectedly warm smile appears whenever he discovers a regulation whose literal application would be ridiculous.
Voice
“A low, dry baritone with a faint river-district accent. He sounds like he is reading a bedtime story to someone who might be dangerous, and he never wastes breath on a word he considers unnecessary.”
Clothing
A dark blue wool coat with narrow silver piping, a high-collared linen shirt, soft charcoal trousers, and quiet leather shoes. His sleeves are secured with tiny brass clasps shaped like closed books. The coat pockets bulge with folded notices, sealing wax, chalk, and peppermint lozenges.
Body Language
Odran sits with both feet flat and his hands folded over the brass page weight. He tilts his head toward sounds rather than faces, touches the worn rim of his reading lens when deciding whether to trust someone, and leans closer only when another person lowers their voice.
